Grass Valley Sucks AND Newegg Sucks

GrassValley used to be Canopus when I bought the ADVC110 video converter. This is a little white box which I can use to plug my camcorder in to the computer to do video capturing. It worked well at work doing digibeta transcoding so I bought one for home for simple video editing.

It worked right once when I bought it in Feb 2009. But I never got around to doing home movies until October 2010. When I went to use it this time, I smelled a burning odor and the thing went kaput. I have no idea what went wrong.

When I purchased the thing from Newegg, it was a couple hundred dollars. But it has a 3 year warranty. So that's good right?

GrassValley, after buying/changing from Canopus, decided to change the warranty on my device from 3 years to 1 year.

My product manual says 3 years.

The Newegg product page still says 3 years at the time of this writing.

The GrassValley website documents still say 3 years, although a newer PDF says 1 year now as well.

What. The. Hell.

So apparently manufacturer warranties are meaningless. Apparently they can simply retroactively change them to whatever serves their purpose.

BBB complaint filed but what else can I do? The manufacturer refuses to stand behind this product.

So we've been contacting NewEgg? What is their policy when a product is listed with the wrong information?

Is it to correct the product description? Nope, we informed NewEgg that the description was wrong back in October and they still haven't corrected it.

In fact, after 7 phone calls, today we finally got an answer from NewEgg on their policy: Nothing. NewEgg will do nothing for us. Not a replacement, not a small credit, not a bumper sticker, nada.

Why 7 phone calls? Cause we kept getting the "oh we'll look in to it and call you back in an hour". It's one thing for NewEgg to do nothing, but to give us weeks and weeks of run around, well that's just amazing customer service.

My purchase is just a small drop in the bucket for NewEgg. So go ahead, keep shopping with them. Their big numbers mean they don't have to care about you.

As for the ADVC110? Apparently it's not designed very well or otherwise it wouldn't need a reduced warranty would it.

You get what you pay for. I paid quite a bit for a home video transcoder and that's just what I got: quite a bit of ripped off.

At $200 it's *almost* worth doing a small claims court.

If the US law is anything similar to over here, you have a legally binding warranty contract which is classed as part of the product you bought..

If it was advertised with a 3yr warranty, then thats what you bought. If the actual manufacturer only gives it a 1 yr warranty, but it was advertised with a 3yr warranty, then thats not your problem. You bought a 3 year warranty, so thats what you get. Its up to the vendor to sort themselves out with the manufacturer and try and justify any typos that they made!

Over here, the law is only as good as the amount of money you're willing to blow on it. It's not like I can call the police and say 'hey, I've been ripped off' and then they'd go get my money. No, I have to spend $50 on a small claims court and then I'm assuming $400 on a plane ticket to go show up. I'd probably win the fact that they have to support a 3 year warranty. But then they'd probably find a reason for the repair to not be covered under warranty.

Hmm....but due to the merger/buyout, I wonder if that is what is giving them the ability to not worry about this older product? Or is it the same company that just simply switched their name around?

All it takes is for someone behind the phone to say "We will go right ahead and do that replacement for you." I reading how there is a law coming out now that requires restaurants to honor all coupons or something like to the expiration date an that you can't deny anyone use of it. Apparently, something needs to be done about the same thing with printed warranty cards.

I am a little disturbed with New Egg, though. With everything that they carry, they could easily go to the vendor and threaten to stop transactions if they do not cover their printed warranty.
