I have one of the first gen ones. It will probally end up a racecar after I get mine done.

Check for bondo, check all fluids, make sure the clutch isn't wiped, look under the chassis for bends or dings. Pretty much go over it with a fine tooth comb and point everything out.

Update it is a 89 manual twin turbo has a brand new tranny in it but the engine has 160k miles...but in good condition. Its a targa top also. it has double pin stripe down the middle of the car. on the side it says official pace car, it does need a new paint job for its a dark metallic blue thats startin to flake. I didnt get to test drive it for it didnt have the battery they took it out so tommorrow as in friday we gunna fire it up

The Turbo's are the most important thing to watch. Have them checked out by a pro. To replace them would cost you about as much as 2 fully loaded state of the art PC's (Intel to boot) ;)

if the battery was how, how long was it sitting? The shorter the better.
I dont know much about toyotas, but on honda's of that age, a good sign of the condition the car is in are the lift points. They will become quite rusted and virtually useless on a car that has not been maintained. (washed, parked on a driveway, not abused etc.)

The main thing to check on turbos are: Shaft play, should be minimal up/down, left right, excessive oil leakage (all turbos leak some oil due to blow by) and condition of the blades on the impellers (no excessive nics ect).

EDIT: Check how freely the impellers spin also, should spin very easily!

However might be hard to check untill you get the car home, where you can rip into it.
