Last night I found myself totally amazed and bewildered by peoples use of the english language since the advent of the internet and text messaging, so I thought I'd mention it LOL
I was playing UT2k4 (as I always do) and there were people typing messages that made little sense, but what really caught my eye ... well me ear actually was one particular guy. We were all pretty close up trying to kill each other and he got killed by a pretty lucky, and laughable shot, so he use voicechat and said ......... LOL. He actually said LOL through voice chat!!! Call me stupid but weren't expressions like LOL, LMAO and all that created to convey emotions that text can't do? So it struck me as infinitely more funny that someone would vocalise them rather that just do them. To make it even more strange when he said it he sounded like a miserable bastard and not some guy who was actually Laughing Out Loud (or had been).
Oh well, just thought I'd comment on how the language we use has been altered through our heavy use of text.

Priest and Gabe are LOL hounds. Every kill or death seems to be funny to at least one of them. I was playing one night and my wife came in to my room asking why the computer kept going 'Lauhing Out Loud'. LOL. I swear, every 5 seconds someone sais it lol. I think Gabe made a keybind.
Bind F "fire; say "Laughs Out Loud"

I use it so much only because I am usually so entertained at the way in which I was just slaughtered. It usually makes me chuckle a bit when I watch my body parts flying in every direction, and then adding the lovely "Microsoft SAM" voice saying Laughing Out Loud makes it even better. Most times, I will loose whatever I am drinking out my nostrils if the timing is right. I changed the translation on mine though, so when the computer reads "LOL" it now says, "Please pass the bologna" with an emphasis on the G.
On the related note tho, I almost did say LOL one night over voice chat with you KS. Caught myself tho before I said it.

Saying lol out loud is a quick way to get strange looks from people
...not that I know from experience...
Anywho, it seems there are a select group of people in my school that use leetspeak out loud... Many shouts of "I powned you!" and "ess-tee-eff-Up haxor!" prevail our Quake matches, followed by excuses of "I lag eye-arr-ell" from the losing side.

Hehe, what can i say, im a happy guy! I suppose i say 'LOL' so often just because i do find some of the ways in which i kill people or get killed funny. Although i dont go as far as to shout 'LOL' down the mic, i do actually sit in my chair having a little laugh a things, and at the same time i hit Alt on my keyboard to say 'LOL' . . :P
I dont use leetspeak or any abreviations like 'LOL' talking to people in real life, i find it a little, well . .geeky and embarasing to be honest. Might just be me though ;)

Yeah people use acronyms all the time BUT they are just abbrieviations of words or phrases, which is ok. But when someone says an acronym that was created to convey emotion via email, text messaging or IM (like LOL, LMAO and ROFL) then it's totally stupid.

And people that say an acronym with more syllabols than the real phrase (like WWII)... that's annoying

saying LOL rather then laughing is pathetic in my opinion. If you want to convey laughing over speech, laugh, dont say LOL cuz it doesnt mean LOL when you say LOL cuz you more then likely sound like a miserable SOB when you say it.
Its like sarcasm or something confused with bitter hatred of life
