Well I have been promising this for a while and here goes

For SETI Virgins

1. Download a piece of software Command line (ftp://alien.ssl.berkeley.edu/pub/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe )
2. Run the file
3. When asked select 1 to setup a new account
4. Enter a valid email address
5. Answer y or n to the next question about displaying your email address the choice is yours
6. Enter the name you want for the account
7. Answer y or n to the next question about displaying your email address the choice is yours
8. Enter the number for your country – US is 1 UK is 213 – otherwise press return and note your countries number
9. Enter your Postal Code if you want press enter to leave blank
10. Enter 0, 1, 2, 3 depending on where your computer(s) are
11. Double check your details and then enter y

You should now have a screen that displays your account details and the words getting data. Once the download is complete you see a message analysing data.

Right you are up and running when the work unit is complete the software will send the unit back to Berkley and your account will be credited with the unit.

You have some additional bits to do now – don’t worry it is painless.

Get your SETI password

Go to the link Get Password (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/get_passwd.html ) and enter your email account and click submit query. Your password for your SETI account will be emailed to you. Keep it safe. If the password does not appear within about 30 mins – repeat the process – it’s a bit temperamental.

Join LiquidNinjas

Go to the link LiquidNinjas (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/team/team_141047.html) and click on Join - enter your email account and your password

That’s it you are now a fully fledged member of LiquidNinjas SETI team

Installing Seti command line on an NT/W2k machine The sneaky version :elaugh4:

To make it a bit more secure – rename the seti.exe to idle.exe

Steps 1 and 2 are for a NT machine

1. Copy srvany.exe to seti directory - dont call it seti though as it sort of gives the game away :D
2. Copy instsrv.exe to NT directory

For both NT and W2K

3. Drop to command prompt
4. Change to the seti directory
5. Type instsrv seti c:\seti\srvany.exe
6. Run Regedit
7. HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\Services
8. Highlight Seti service
9. Right click select new, key then Type Parameters
10. Right click on Parameters
New string value names
Application
AppDirectory
AppParameters (only use if multiple processors or pointing at a setiq)
11. in Application type c:\seti\seti.exe
12. in AppDirectory type c:\seti
13. if you have more than one cpu
in AppParameters type –cpu 0 (for your second install you need to put -cpu 1)
14. if you are pointing the install at a setiq
in AppParameters type –proxy ipaddress: portnumber (there is no space betweeen the : and the p if I leave it in the destructions I get a nice :p )
15. Net stop seti
16. Go into explorer and run seti.exe from there to attach under own ID, and to get its first unit
17. Close down the DOS box
18. Net start seti

Oh and thanks go to Scotty who tried to talk me through my first install of one of these many moons ago - see I wrote it all down like a good girl :D

Nonet (aka sneaknet) SETI

ok heres my way (no singing please) :violin:

on a pc with access to the net and a CD writer

1. install setdriver and seti client in a sub directory
2. setup the seti driver to cache 200-500 units
3. transmit so that the setidriver fills up
4. write the directory all its subdirectories to the cd
6. delete all the subdirectories numbered 1 to 500
5. go to machine with no net
6. copy the directory to the no net machine
7. in explorer highlight the directory, right click, properties and remove the read only tick - apply it to all the subdirectories
8. then set the setidriver away crunching
9. when some are done copy the files subdirectories with the file result.sah in onto a floppy
10. copy them back into the directory on the orginal machine
11. restart setidriver and set the cache to 0 so it does not download any more
12. hit transmit

step 7 is very important if you transport them on a CD as they become read only and setidriver will sit and do nothing with the units

oh and you can do it with floppy disks - but you will only get around 4 unprocessed work units per floppy - but some of us have been that desparate before
