Hi all, I got my network set up and wanted to access the web on all systems but I could not get it to work
Well after a bunch of failed attempts I went looking around for some info and came across this PROXY (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm) It was very simple to set up
So now some questions, Do I have to set up a firewall on all systems or just the one with Internet access? And the same for antivirus? Thanks guys

Hi Bill,
First it is very nice to see you posting in LN.
We appreciate your support!!
Now:
If you are running on a DSL or cable line, and you pick up a router (about $100.00 US), you can run up to 256 seperate IP addresses off of it at no further cost.
So, each line has an independent IP address, and you can run all systems at the same time.
This is what I, and seveal others do, and it is perfect.
This is also great for SETI, as all boxes are running 24/7 at the same time.
It will make the kids very happy: Dad can run his stuff, and the kids and mom can run on their Internet or whatever.
Hope this helps ya.
Take care.........

Hi bill,
Lee has the right idea. In fact, you can pick up a cable/dsl router for $60 these days, which handle all the internet routing and firewall options automatically. You dont have to worry about setting up software or having that PC on all the time. For $60, its an option well spent.
On that subject, Ive used the AnalogX version (lots of their software), and it works pretty good. Another alternative is WinGate, which works good. Or IShare. If you have Windows2000 or XP, they have Internet sharing built right in, so you dont even need a 3rd party solution.
As for the software firewall, generally you will want to run this on ALL the PCs for the best security (if yer not using the $60 home router). There IS a way to configure some of these to work on one machine only, but it is DIFFICULT and may not work very well (ie, if one of the machines wants to access something not recognized, youd have to walk all the way other to the other machine and click the pass-thru dialog). There are server varients, but they are expensive.
Nope, the best way is the home router. Some of these can be used with Dial-Up as well, but Ive never tried it.

Thanks for the info. I'm on dial up so I'll set up zone alarm and AVG on each computer :)
