View Full Version : Changing Chiller Radiator Fan
Hi Fellas,
I want to change the current Fan installed on my Chiller with 3 90mm 12V Fans. Do you think these 3 Fans will do the job?
Here's a pic of my chiller:

Thats one mother fan!
Yeah, I really dont see why not. Probably save a bit of electric as well ;) I see a lot of phase-changes running on DC dans.
That thing there is either really old, or designed for some industrial use. Actually, the blade pitch is pretty severe, so it's really meant for delivering some serious air pressure.
Maybe you can get one of those 184mm fans?
Hi Tom,
According to the guy who gave it to me, the unit is 20+ years old and the fan is indeed a jurassic one, It must be the original :)
The question is: Will this Fan change hurt the chiller performance? I know the radiator is there to help cool the gas down again, but how "important" (or helpful) in the circuit is this process?

Considering the age of the fan, I don't think you'll take a serious performance loss. Phase-change, like a peltier, works on the principle of delta T. Your delta T is determined by the amount of wattage being input in to the system, and how much wattage the system can handle effectively. So say in your case, you have a delta T of 50. Ambient is 25, and with the current can the heat exchange is running at 35c. So you'll see a -15c evap temp. But with a smaller fan, heat exchanger might be 40c, so you'll only see -10c evap temp. However, since this is a chiller, and you're passing through a variety of thermal interfaces, 5c warmer exchanger temps wont even be close to equaling 5c CPU differences. The effect might only be 1-2 degrees (which you'd see on a warmer day anyway).
Im not sure I know why you'd go with 3 92mm fans. THe larger the fan you choose the quieter the system. I would go with a single more powerful 120 or larger fan (i think ive seen 160mm or 180mm). Even better, go with a blower style fan if you can find one that fits. They are usually a bit louder, but will give the best performance.
Thanks for the explanation and suggestion Tom.
The main reason I'm changing the fan is noise, I don't bother when I'm playing games but seeing DVD's it starts to piss me off. I will do a serch at the local AC stores nearby and see what they have that could fit on my chiller, but as I said I don't want something noisy.
Note: I always thought that the larger the Fan the louder It would be (besides RPM of course), guess I was wrong. I was intending to use the 3 90mm fans cause they was already there ready to use, I wouldn't have to buy anything :)
Regards, KODE.

wow! thats nearly identical to my setup! i have a much larger resovoir though...
i'm using normal 120mm computer fans in a push pull arrangement 2 on each side of the case and it works absolutly fine :)
