woooo what a ride

i was riding home on my loverly motorbike just about to slow down to pull into my drive when my back wheel locks solid and forces me to execute a "unique" manuver involving much swearing and gnashing of teeth to bring the bike to a safe halt (even managed to get it off the road so i wasn't in anyones way! goddamn i'm good...)

anyway i take a look at the back wheel and realise the bolt holding everything together has come out and the wheel is now wedged sideways in the frame!

anyway what i'm wondering is if any of the bikers here have heard of these bolts working loose? i'd assume bike manufacturers realise that back wheels are quite important and if they fall off it could be considered as "bad" so they'd take steps to prevent it? i know my bike vibrates like hell and puts buckets of power through the back end but again... the manufacturers must know this?

Woah, glad to see you post to tell the tale dicki!! This happened to me on a dirt bike many years ago. On that particular setup, the bearings were worn and dirty and caused excessive vibration which loosened the whole system (not to the degree yours did, but bad enough) despite the whole assembly was counterthreaded and pinned!! I would disassemble, clean, inspect for uneven wear or cracks around the whole rear wheel assembly, replace(if/where needed), relube, and drop a healthy dab of threadlock on the main axle nuts for good measure.

Geez man, glad to hear you came out of it alive ;)

Sounds pretty messed up though, I can't beleive the bolt would just come loose like that. Does it need regular replacement?

i think i know what happened... the guy who owned the bike before me stuck the bolt through from the wrong side so all the shaking and torque reaction was undoing the bolt!

ahh well the bike will be off the road while i service it so i will sort it then :)
