View Full Version : I hate the situation I'm in today :(

Cliff notes:
Got bit by neighbors dog, now neighbor is in trouble.

Long story.

I live in a quiet neighborhood in a small town outside Houston. A 1 mile radius around me is houses in the 100,000-400,000 range. Next door to me on my left is a 40 something divorcee with her two children and 3 dogs. She has a problem where she doesn't dicipline her dogs or her kids and they run roughshot all over her.
I was mowing my yard today and her dogs gotten out of her backyard for the umpteenth time. (they dig out constantly) and two of them are terrorizing the neighborhood. They started with me circling barking and growling and finally one bit my ankle. They were obviously testing what they could get away with and the bite was the culmination of that incident so far. Bite was through the denim of my Levis and only scratched the skin underneath. I got pissed and charged the dogs and they ran two houses away....Where they proceed to scare an old lady who sits on her porch swing all day every day into her house. I go inside tell the wife what happened and cleanup then go back out and sweep my clippings. Wife apparently freaked even though she saw I wasn't really hurt badly. She was already worried about our kids not liking to play in the front yard and called animal control. (this is the first time we have called authorities about the dogs but other neighbors have) Anywho, I try to calm the wife down. I didn't want to make this big a deal about this. I have to live next to this women and would prefer things stay civil but it hit the fan anyway. I was on the porch swing smoking my pipe and PD shows up asking a bunch of questions (dogs still running around) then they go talk to several neighbors some of which got harrassed by the dogs while we were talking. Later the neighbor chic shows up and PD talks with her. She denies there is any real problem and comes up to my porch apologizing and talking about how the dogs have only gotten out once before  (I think the cop knew at that point she had lied after having talked to 3 or 4 neighbors) Then animal control shows up and talks to me....And tell me they have personally collected her dogs before and one of them has to testify in court against her Monday
Now my neighbor has her dogs in the pound again (she just got them out a couple months ago at great expense) And she was ticketed for the incident.
I'm not pressing charges and only filled an incident report with the PD (cuz they were there and practically insisted)

Now I have a neighbor pissed at me even though I didn't do anything wrong and I hate being at odds with people :(

I hate this :(

edit to add:

(Oh...And the dogs came at the cop who retreated to thier cruiser. Later They said "I didn't want to have to shoot the dog so I just got back in the cruiser to wait for animal control to handle this.)

Hi m8,

Sorry to hear about that, but no question you did the right thing m8, neighbors can be a pain the arse sometimes. I'm a little bit like you and I hate those kind of situations, but some people are just what they are (no need to mention what) we cannot change the way they think and their opinion about us, you just don't have to bother with that :)

Hope you get it sorted.

Regards, KODE.

Yea you didn't do anything wrong... It's not your fault that the dog bit you. And its not your fault that your neighbor keeps dangerous dogs that she can't control... You did the right thing... And the women will get over it eventually...

Now that I think of it. She has fueded with one neighbor down the street. (A UNION electrician) Who ended up getting a lawyer to put her in her place and another neighbor right behind her. Her dogs had attacked their dogs.
Hrm...3 strikes...She needs to go to jail for the rest of her life :D

They never let me get that close. They'll come up and bark and growl but if i step toward them they bolt then re-approach. Those two work together well. They made a circle at about 4 feet barking and growling then one goes in for a quick bite behind yah.

Hey Spec,
That's funny dude!! I lived in Montana almost all my life. Billings to be exact. I know they are throwing the three S's around a lot because of the wolves they reintroduced several years ago. Anyway, moved to Alaska in 99 And I love it here.

speculative
04-03-2004, 11:35 AM
Yeah, in fact the reason the wolves haven't been de-listed yet is because Wyoming's "official" plan for management is the 3 S's! :D MT, WY, and ID's plans all have to be approved before the Feds will delist the wolves. A classmate of mine is doing his thesis on this subject. He's been researching it for about 4 years now.

Well up here they fianlly got it approved to shoot them from the airplane in certain areas of the state. Now, I don't want to wipe out the wolf species. But I'm teling ya, they are wiping out the moose in certain parts of the state. Mark my words the Elk in Montana will suffer the same fate as our moose if their populations aren't controled. In Montana, I think what they shoukld do is have a season on wolves, just like everything else.

sorry.. they way I understood it, was chinese hot mustard as something that could permanantly blind it. That isnt cool. I also didnt understand that the animal had or was about to attack you then you would do this. I saw it as yea, just shoot it in the face aka blind them all, so that we dont have to worry about them ever again.
Problem with this anyways is its a measure you have to be there for, and in most cases of animals biting humans, they arent carrying around anything to defend themselves with OR they are jack :mad2::mad2::mad2: kids that should get there asses kicked that threw things at the animals pissing them off enough and in my opinion deserved it.

ok, another problem.. I thought this was a completly different post oops. So yea, thats one of the problems with our system, if you want something fixed thats wrong, you have to piss the people off. There is no way to anonomously complain, unless you are a minor (I believe...) So... if your kid would like to complain to the police, and file a complaint, ask down at the city hall, or police depertment, or call an attorney etc if you have one and see. That way you can have them arrested for what there dog did, that your children witnessed. Unless of coarse they didnt see the dogs rampaging across the area.
I dunno, it difenitly sucks
I live in a quad and my neighbors smoke right outside my bedroom window. It sucks.. i hate smoking, and I hate smoke, there is no ordinance against them doing this, so i cant do anything other then complain when they dont throw there cig butts away. )c: Im afraid to say anything cuz im almost positive they are drug dealers.

If its legal to shoot in the city limits.. find the legalities of shooting animals on your property, if you can even shoot a gun in the city limits, you might just have to post a sign saying tresspassers wil be shot on sight etc. Then.. its free game. Hrm.. wonder what the legalities are if you clubbed one of the dogs that was out of sight on your property as well.. Of coarse clubbing a dog would be pretty brutal, but taking the precautions to say (say not do.. so they think you might) you are going to do so if/when it is legal may bring your neighbor to enlighten themselves on the matter.

spldart
04-06-2004, 11:23 PM
It is not legal to shoot in the city limits here without serious reason. But it is legal to shoot animals or people if you so much as feel threatened and you are on your own property. Outside or in. You can also shoot someone on your property who is trying to take it. Such as your car.
I could have shot that dog the other day if I had my gun on me cuz I was on my grass when it happened.

We have a convicted and released child molester who moved onto our street last year or so. The cops came through and told all of us about it and said if we feel threatened (in ANY way) that we can shoot him (while he is on our property).
Ex cons have to step carefully here. The court will just assume the ex con is at fault and find for the person claming defense in most all cases.
My wife made it clear to that dude that he better not step on our property...He always gets off the sidewalk and walks past on the street at our house and a couple others when he walks his dog :D

Just "hide" some Easter Baskets this weekend.....

We've all heard it, "Don't give your dog chocolate it will kill him". We'll how true is it you're probably wondering. Do I have to rush him to an emergency vet if he ate one of my M&M's?

The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.

Toxic Levels

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz.

Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.

Clinical Signs

Xanthines affect the nervous system, cardiovascular system and peripheral nerves. It has a diuretic effect as well. Clinical signs:

Hyper excitability
Hyper irritability
Increased heart rate
Restlessness
Increased urination
Muscle tremors
Vomiting
Diarrhea

Treatment

There is no specific antidote for this poisoning. And the half life of the toxin is 17.5 hours in dogs. Induce vomiting in the first 1-2 hours if the quantity is unknown. Administering activated charcoal may inhibit absorption of the toxin. An anticonvulsant might be indicated if neurological signs are present and needs to be controlled. Oxygen therapy, intravenous medications, and fluids might be needed to protect the heart.

Milk chocolate will often cause diarrhea 12-24 hours after ingestion. This should be treated symptomatically (fluids, etc..) to prevent dehydration.

If you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate contact your Vet immediately! They can help you determine the the proper treatment for your pet.

Funny. The animal control said we should take pics or vids of the dogs out cuz their response time is so slow they can't get here in time.
While they were here I asked them what would happen if one of the dogs attacked me or my kids and I shot it. They said I would be arrested for discharging a firearm in the city limits. A misdemeanor. believe me i get a kick out of the brutal suggestions however you cant blame the scorpion for its sting much less the dogs for their natural instinct remember i said natural...its up to humans to domesticate and train these creatures to avoid their impulses.

i suggested the fire extinguisher for a couple reasons, 1 they have a 10' spray, 2 the dry carbon dioxide is not fatal 3 the powder will leave a trace where it is sprayed so if the neighbor calls the cops for temp blinding her dog, it will be clear on which side of the fence it was on at the time of the spraying proving beyond a doubt that she is irresponsible for her *pet*.

fwiw maybe she should get geese instead, they are territorial and will attack if feel threatened and make a hell of a racket if an intruder comes by.

Spldart, i wish you luck buddy, with all the regular (forgive the phrase) drama you have IRL and all the emotional load you survive with on a daily, your neighbors bullcrap is the last thing you need right now. this crap must stop so you can get back to your routine. i dont pity you but you have my sympathies all the same.

Wow, what a thread.
coming to the end I began to remember she has children. Whom know how she is and see exactly how she is treated.
How ever you deal with her will definatly have an impact on her children as they have no other male influences (this is how i grew up i am guessing)

I think that a long range supersoaker, or garden hose would be more than adequate to deter the dogs. As soon as they enter the yard go for it, they will evantually learn (my girlfriends dog is terrified of garden hoses)

That or the BB gun is the best solution. I say
court is dumb. shooting a gun off in your neigherbood is no good either, what if you miss and hit something else.

Her children are part of the reason her dogs are so messed up. They abuse the dogs regularly. I'm stunned they don't bite her kids but so far they have only attacked the neighbors and neighbors pets. These dogs have also caused a few hundred dollars of damage to my property over the last couple of years as well. Super Soakers and garden hoses do nothing. The Police recommend the highest rated defense spray I can find. They also say it is perfectly legal to shoot the dogs on my property to defend myself and my family. They also gave me relivent munincipal codes and how to properly pursue them. I'll be recording my evidence and will later send her a certified letter. Then I will press charges personally.
