View Full Version : Re-installing WInXP with dual boot.
Hi,
I´m dual booting between W2K and XP respectively. I need to do a fresh install of the XP and was wondering if i can just format partition D and install XP on it again. Will I be able to get into W2K if I format partition D? If the XP had created files on C, are these files just being overwrited if I reinstall XP again?
INFO: 40Gb Maxtor with two 20Gb partitions C, D. W2K installed on partition C and XP installed on partition D.
Thanx, KODE.

I'm not really shure but, you should be able to pull it off. I'd try and reinstall XP first and see if the doesn't clear up your problems. I've allways followed the "older first" way of doing it but if you're not really changing anything just taking care of a pooched install it should work.
Someone will reply telling us if it will work or not. :D

My guess is no... XP is usually very good about recognizing partitions / raid setups / previous installs. But definitely wait for the mickeysoft guy to confirm before you do it :D
I can´t re-install, my only option is a fresh install of XP. I miss a step to activate it when installing this OS :( (It´s a cra@#ed XP).

Hi Kode,
It is not an XP issue at all.
You can install XP, then Win2K.
You can install Win2K, then Win9X.
You need to put the higher OS on first and then the lesser.
This is a MS thing, I do not know of a way around it.
I am not saying that there is not a way, just don't know it.
It has to do with the boot.ini and such.
Take care.......
hmm..well I really don´t want to format the C partition, too much info there, games etc... Can anyone give me the contents of boot.ini from a single boot with W2K? (a picture will be welcome).

I can try when I get home but I don't know if it will work.
Option 2: backup all your stuff and update 2k to XP. Just a thought.
