Heres the scenario - I have a lan at home 10/100 going through a d-link wireless - wireless for the laptop and wired for my server and a few other pc's. The lan runs on 192.168.0.x.

I have two boxes I'd like to hook peer to peer with 1000/100 cards to take advantage of the faster transfers at the same time maintianing the lan connection. (too cheap to upgrade the router at this time!!!)

Would putting second nic cards in those boxes and setting their ip's to 192.168.2.x do the trick?

I would then map drives using the specific ip to avoid going through the router..

Thx.

That would do it.

If you set up persistent routes (route -p) for those hosts through the giga interfaces, you'll be able to use hostnames instead of IPs so you could always do direct access i.e \\machine1\c$ or \\machine2\share

Use a crossover cable between the 2 new cards for a "seperate" network ;)

Depending on the card, you might not even need an x-over. Most gigabit over copper interfaces I've come across are autosensing.
