LN.com is currently seeking donations in the forms of computer parts. This will be used for a dedicated LN server for either hosting files, internet games, and a backup webserver perhaps. Currently, I have the following to donate myself:

Duron 850
Tbird 900
FOP32-1
13g 5400 HD
256m PC133 SDram
450w PSU
NIC

What I am short on is a Socket A mobo (just sold my last one), case, floppy, cdrom. Also, if anyone has faster CPU, Hard Drive, or has a better CPU cooler, those would be nice. Im particullarly interested in scsi drives.

Am mostly interested in donations, but may consider buying hardware I need at a discount as well. Could also use a Linux CD (Redhat or SuSe prefered).

Hardware donations will count nicely, and we'll give perks or whatnot in return. I will put this server on my new 1024/1024 DSL line full time, and will do things specifically for LN.

So, if you have things to spare, let me know. Thanks!

Hey wait I have a KK266-R sittin around. The primary IDE ports don't work but the RAID ones do. But since you are using SCSI it don't matter. Let me know if you want that too.

Tom,

Please earmark my last donation to LN as "server" funds.

Unfortunately i just sold off most of my spare kit, but i'll look around the lab for any other spare items.

The IDE ports dont work? Well thats crazy...howd you manage that ;). Is that a DDR mobo? I dont have any DDR ram.

Well if I can find someone willing to send some sacrificial DDR (need at least 256m) we could go that route. Hmm. Bummer is...without the IDE ports, not sure how id hook up the CD rom. It may or may not work happily on the raid controller.

Well heck, if worse comes to worse it will work hehe. Going to have a rather frankensteinish PC :)

Hey Tom its a SDR board, has the KT133A chipset. Was the fastest SDR board ever made. It would run at 160+ FSB 24/7. This board is back from RMA from Iwill so I sold it and the person told me that they did not work and sent it back to me, though I never tested it. If you want I can test it out before I send it off to you. And if you need I have some Crucial pc133 I can send with it.

Oh! KT133a! Perfect! Yeah m8, if you wanna send, go for it. It should make a fine server. Not sure if I'll overclock it. Then again, an overclocking website should run on an overclocked server.

More ram the merrier, if its PC133 2-2-2 cl2, which will match the 256 crucial dimm im throwing in.

The more ram we have, the more servers we can run. JKII, UT, Q3, MOHAA, etc. Of course i need to save room for SQL, FTP, WWW, DNS and possibly SMTP.

Kewl I have a stick of 256 and a stick of 128 both are pc133 Cl2 2-2-2. Just email me or pm me with your addy as I can't seem to find it anywhere, and I'll mail it all out tomorrow.

Hi Tom, and all, of course,

The Adaptec 2940U, SCSI cable, and 12X CDROM are on the way.

Should have by Thursday or so.

Let me know what you are still short, will see what I can scrounge up.

Take care......

I also have a spare 128 stick of Crucial PC 133 CL2 2-2-2.

Do you need it?

Player0

Hmm. yeah, i think that will work. I have two Crucial 256m 2-2-2 CL2 sticks at home, one I was going to put in my GFs machine. But if you and NY both send 128m sticks, ill put those two in the GF machine, and put 3x 256m sticks in the KK board. That gives the webserver a full 768m of ram which will be perfect for what we are doing.

If it will run stable with 3 sticks :)

Good point...the KT133A chipset was always a bit finicky. I was always able to run my KT7A (KT133A) with 3 256 sticks as long as I did not overclock. Overclocked it got a bit dicey at times...not at all bad for a home PC, but not what I would think is acceptable for server duty.

But it never hurts to try :)

Well, Ill find out soon enough. 512m is still quite acceptable. Ill never be too far away from the server anyway. Im not sure if Ill rent a spot for it at work, or get the DSL line installed at home for it. Either way, ill have direct access to it in times of problems...and remote access otherwise.

I think I should get a RedHat book. Ive done very little with Linux, maybe help out some friends with networking or Samba servers. I have AIX and FreeBSD experience, I suppose it can't be too different.

I hope RedHat supports all the hardware.

I used to run the KK with 2x128 and a 256 at a 160+ FSB and never had a hiccup.

tom,
I don't know what chipset my aopen board has, but she runs stable with my 2sticks of 256. ram at 145Mhz that is.. might be a bit flakey with 3sticks thou.

p.s.... i still need ur addy so i can send the hdd and floppy.
