Hi kms,

Matrox has always been a contender, but the big boys (ATI, NVidia, etc) have gotten the lime light lately.

Looks like it is pay back time. It is an impressive write-up.

P.S..........Good to see ya here, keep up the posts.

Take care........

looks good, i like th idea of a 256 bit memory interface. huge memory throughput with cheap chips :)

has anyone actually seen any real life benchmarks yet?

now those WILL be interesting

Geez, ive always liked Matrox for business video cards...they look great, I never thought they'd get back in to gaming though! The technology looks good, I just hope they dont become like Kyro.

It's Parhelia with an a.... ;) I think it could be good, it is supposed to beat the ti4600 by 20-30% in most benchies, but it will be interesting to see how the drivers pan out. Then again, Matrox gave up the gaming market a couple years back so...

Visually this card will have it all, I think it might be one of the big technological advances in display in a while. Triple-monitors.... *drool*.

Hi Dexter,

I have a Appian Jeronomo Pro vid card (dual monitor) and I love it.

It is really cool to have two monitors set up side be side, and when you move the mouse it goes from one monitor to the other. You can also set it up to be one screen over two monitors.

Gaming wise, I don't know, cause I don't game, but it sure makes nice spreadsheets. Plus you can have two different screens open up at once. Sure makes life easier.

The only problem is when I got this card, it was VERY expensive. I think the GS550 card has dual monitor capability also. And it is only about $100.00 US. Of course, it may be down in price now.

Take care.........

Here's probably the best overview of the parhelia on the net: http://www.icrontic.com/index.php?page=public/articles&articleId=201

looks like a really fancy card, with some genuinly innovative features displacement mapping looks cool. Matrox have always been a bit on the sidelines in the graphics biz they made good product just low on the price to performance index hopefully this will bring them to centre stage, more competition is always good.

Maybe imagination tech will follow matrox's example and get their act together and kyro will make a come back, kyro 3 is supposed to be out soon. But then they always slip.

Hi everyone (new to this board so here goes...)

Matrox didn't disapear from the gaming market, the difference with matrox is that their dev cycle is a lot longer than Nvidia or ATI, they seem to work to a 2 or 3 year cycle of releasing a mindblowing card and then spend a couple of years tweaking the same card for business use. The G400 was a great gaming card when it was released and the 450 and 550 where minor refinements to the same card, but aimed at the business sector not gamers, this strategy gets the most mileage out of each generation of boards, and avoids most of the crippling dev costs incurred by Nvidia's six month cycle!
This doesn't mean either company is better than the other, just that they use different strategies for marketing etc;)

PS: Hi to everyone from PCLincs!:D

Now I just need three 17" black flat screens heh. Whats that...$2000 or so? Hah.

Well, thats certainly one way to look at Matrox...they simply have a development cycle of about...oh...4 years :) Not sure I necessarily agree with that theory, but...Im nothing but tickled pink to see them reenter the gaming market.

Frankily, im just happy someone cares as much about 2d quality as 3d quality. Although the new GF4 follows stricter standards, and really looks just as good as ATi or Matrox these days I guess.

Anyone remember the first matrox 3d accelerator card the M3d
which was actually a re branded nec/videologic powervr series 1 one of the forerunners of the kyro cards.

I think it's interesting that matrox are quite clearly gunning for the high end gamer market were as before their products have sat in the middle tried to be a jack of all trades. With great 2d ok 3d and some nice extras like video editing and that dual head stuff superb image quality as well. They were always a bit pricy for what they could do for my money in that middle ground between budget and performance cards.

I just hope they make a good run of this one nvidia and ati have had it all their own way for too long.

The problem with a 3 year product cycle as opposed to 6 months (nvidia) or 8-12 months (ati) is that matrox probably have slipped considerably on the drivers and code-optimization end. We'll just have to see I guess, it would be a disappointment if the Parhelia was like the Radeon 8500, with poor driver support upon release.
