MSI, one of Taiwan’s first-tier motherboard makers, is expected to launch MSI-branded graphics cards using ATI Technologies’ graphic processing units (GPUs) in January next year, according to industry sources.

MSI, which currently mainly uses Nvidia solutions, an archrival of ATI, for its own-brand graphics cards, declined to comment on its future product developments.

MSI decision to adopt chips from both Nvidia and ATI follows the similar moves by competitors like Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology.

Asustek, the largest motherboard maker in Taiwan, buys equal amounts of chips from ATI and Nvidia. Gigabyte, which has a higher proportion of ATI processors on its products, has recently launched a series of new graphics cards using Nvidia’s GeForce FX range of GPUs.

MSI has been cooperating with ATI continuously and uses ATI processors for its ODM production for Medion, a distributor of IT products in Europe. The company also uses ATI’s Radeon 9100IGP integrated chipsets for its motherboards.

MSI is currently Taiwan’s largest maker of graphic cards. The company shipped 730,000 graphics cards in November, compared with 650,000 from Asustek and 250,000 from Gigabyte.
