My brother and I can't seem to get WinXP Pro's native VPN mechanism to work! The skinny is this:

When the (intended) VPN server clicks on "Accept incoming connections," a 60+ second pause ensues, after which the error "Incoming Connections depend on the Routing and Remote Access service which was unable to start. For more information check the system event log."

The event log says, "The Routing and Remote Access service terminated with service-specific error 340 (0x154)." 2 hours of Google searching and Knowledge base research haven't come to fruition.

I cannot get the "Routing and Remote Access" service started. I've tried numerous means. After doing some trace logging I discovered the error logs at the end of this message. I didn't include all of them anyway.

The KICKER is, my brother enabled VPN on his roommate's WinXP Pro box with RRAS disabled!!

I'm confused and frustrated. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

TIA

I'm having the same problem with a Windows 2003 SBS setting up a VPN. Have you found a solution for this problem?

No, no and no. We couldn't get the VPN to work despite many efforts. Some tutorial pages that walk through VPN setup never even discuss if certain radio button are grayed out (which was the case when we began). We stumbled around trying to force them open, and what we got was the error i described.

Sorry bub I can't help. My suggestion may be just get two VPN routers.

Welcome to the boards :)

Yeah, I have VPN routers so I never futzed with Windows VPN client. There are alternative VPN software clients available online for free, but damned if I remember what they are called.

Ive read up, Routing and Remote Access SHOULD need to be enabled for VPN client.

NetBIOS also should be enabled.

You might have to enable NetBIOS in your TCP/IP network settings. I would also double check your TCP/IP set up to make sure you have DNS configured properly, NetBIOS enabled by default, and that your PC is named something standard.

It sounds like a NetBIOS naming issue can cause this problem.
