i was talking to minty_altoid and evilmatt last night down the pub and we have decided that we all have far to many spare computer bits laying around in our houses so we ought to try and break some of them :D

basically our plan is to congregate round my house on sunday... fill a large bucket with transformer cooling oil (non conductive of course) and start slinging computers in it to see how they perform :D

we did also have some interesting ideas involing a chest freezer and a cluster of computers submerged in goo inside the freezer but that might have to wait till we can source more goo

obviously i'll keep you updated and you may well see a joint review detailing our exploits in the near future

Hi Mike,

You be more brave that me.

Even if ya are thousands of miles away, she will find a way to kick your ass for that one.

Glad it be you and not me.:D

I learned a long time ago to stay on her good side.

Hi Liz, you are my friend????

Take care........

When is the goo going in?:D

nitan
07-10-2002, 02:17 PM
SG....there is a layer of goo in there....s'bout 2 inches deep...u can just see a reflection on it...

nitan:)

dicki
07-10-2002, 03:14 PM
yup spot on nitan :)

the goo is in there it is just covering the heatsink, it's been running solidly since sunday afternoon and it peaks at about 44c

the temps are high because the poor little eheim pump i'm using is struggling to pump the oil around (its about the same consistancy as vegetable oil)

basically our plan is now that we've proven the technology we will take it furthe and introduce a freezer into the equation... either tearing one apart like NY or by just getting a chest freezer and filling it with gunk :)

mate.. if one of those old freezers works that'd be perfect :D

SG: the 2 seti lads were not only taking photos of everything they had a video camera setup just incase anything went wrong :D

nitan
07-11-2002, 11:14 AM
right...i will take a look to see wot the state of the freezers are and get back to you soon...

Sweet! Good choice of heatsink for the project too. :) Those Japanese guys with the liquid nitrogen had better watch out! :D

That pump did make some rather intersting noises when we fired it up ;)

also I'm not sure the rad is really up to the job of cooling it's a bit on the small size but best we could get in time.

there was a suggestion in the tp seti boards to use an aux 12v car oil pump and oil cooler which by default are designed for pumping and cooling oil.

Might be worth looking into.

Be great if we can get a freezer for further experimentation, iced goo alround :D

dicki
07-11-2002, 01:51 PM
any idea how noisy that would be? i want quiet goddamnit! remember this is sitting in my room... i need to be able to sleep occasionally

dicki

evilmatt
07-11-2002, 03:21 PM
I'm sure you'd get used to it ;)

Add a few delta 80 mils and you'd hardly notice the noise.

Besides isnt earplugs the obvious solution :D

I'm more of the expresso type but the DO does it's job well :D

Do they have mountian dew on the other side of the pond? If not what do you guys drink for those late night/ early mornings?

Tell you what you've done wrong there dicki... you didn't put any vodka in it

evilmatt
07-12-2002, 06:55 AM
caffeine lots of it, usually in coffee.

cut back a lot since uni.

Ah those afternoons of advanced control systems identification 2 hrs of sleep inducing wonderment. We used to stack up 2 to 4 cups of coffee each to last the duration.

Happy days of caffeine induced paranoia

god i remember that! couldn't even make it through the lecture without coffee...

evilmatt
07-12-2002, 10:34 AM
even then it was touch and go.

well at least we have the knowledge that if we needed to Id a system would be able to know how boring it is and farm it off on someone else :D

I forgot we got Red Bull from you guys. I used to drink far too much of that stuff. Bolth with and without the vodka ;) but I started having freaky pains and I had to cut down. I can see how too much can kill you

Any new developments with the goo?

dicki
07-15-2002, 01:54 PM
still going strong SG... been up for over a week now crunching seti and the temps are 44c and holding through this balmey english summer time...

my partner in crime evilmatt is working on a review as we speak hopefully should be posted soon...

any luck with those freezers nitan?

Surgeon General

Got more pics dicki? Are you going to add more goo? Would adding more goo lower temps at all?

dicki
07-16-2002, 04:30 AM
more goo would increase the thermal mass of the "heatsink" it wouldn't drop temps but it would give a longer time constant when the load on the processor changes so more goo will probably used soon.

thier will be more pics in the review :)

the latest plan is to rip apart a small freezer that nitan has found in his back garden, and then drop the cooling circuit into the goo in a very similer way to northen yankees cooling circuit, hopefully this should drop the temperature of the goo to close to zero (what water temps are you getting NY? ) we'll run the current setup like that for say a month or 2 to see if it survives and then we'll start thinking about putting some decent componants in and stressing it (the stuff we are using at the moment doesn't clock very well, currently a t-bird 900 @ 1g) after that... who knows... maybe a large chest freezer to house a cluster computer? the seti lads will decide that i just do the hardware :)

I was getting water temps around -10 to -15c but I am down and out right now. My KX7 and my XP2000 died. My 2000+ is retail so I will be getting a new one but my KX7 is unRMAable as it has silicone and neoprene all over it.

sorry the reviews taking a while I've been a bit busy, meant to finish it at the weekend but then went home and had no pc access :(

Anyway will be here ........ soon ;)

not sure what would happen to the goo at -10 or so might get a bit syrupy

can't exactly add antifreeze to it but I have a feeling it is liquid down to a lot lower temps than water, checking the data sheet I see it has a pour point of -48 deg c so may well be alright.

dicki mate any idea whether we will need more goo we had a bit left and of course we can reuse the current stuff but will we need more?
