Im looking in to setting up a file server at home. Having destroyed four WD1000JB drives in the past month in my Cube2002 system, ive decided that having my main overclocking toy rig as my main file server is probably not the brightest of ideas.

I have another box here, slightly slower KR7A based with XP1800, does about 1750mhz with a mild overclock (CPU not unlocked). Its stable, and would make a good file server.

So if/when i get my third pair of WD1000JB drives *prays to the rma gods*, Ill put those in this file server, and blamo. Ill put my two 20g IBM 60GXP drives back in to the Cube to save apps and data.

Im looking for a transparant solution. When I turn on the cube, I want to have access to the file server just like it is another local drive. I use a file server at 100bt at work, and its really slow sometimes. So I thinking 1000bt copper ethernet.

Has anyone used this? What sort of speeds? I calculate at least 100MB/s...which is more than plenty for me, my WD drives RAIDed will only need 95MB/s.

Its certainly a costly adventure, but...im really quite sick of loosing data to my stupid screw ups. I want to beable to play without risk of loosing data hehe :)

Guess Im gonna find out for myself anyway. Having a networked drive that should run somewhere around 90-100MBs is going to open up some huge possibilities for sure. Thats fast enough to run applications right off the network. Maybe even games. So instead of installing Jedi Outcast on every PC here, I just run it from the network drive.

Plus I can run Antivirus and file backups and defrags and other maintenance on the File Server without interrupting my other work or game schedule.

But time will tell. Still need some gigabit NIC cards.

Hopefully they will come down in price in the next year or so as I would really like to get one myself, but the price is just too much for me.

The whole kit to hook up 3 pcs is going to run me $400. Thats less money than doing a wireless Lan. Expensive yes, but gigabit will retain its value for a while. Plus, my two WD hard drives almost cost $400 new. Putting $400 worth of hard drive in to a seperate, isolated box is an insurance policy. Not just for the hardware, but for the data as well, which I cant afford to loose anymore of.

tom,
I don't use gigabtye at home just 100mbps. We are getting gigabtye here at school at the beginning of the year. which should help us out allot. I thought about goin gigabyte also but a lil to expensive for me right now.

p.s.- wireless is awsome!! Not near as fast as 100mb or gigabyte, but just the fact you don't have to have any wires is awsome. I'am a pro at setting it up.. thats all did for months straight at school...and now work. we use cisco (expensive, but great software) and dlink (inexpensive, but not as great as software) The both will connect to each other's acces points.. which is a plus. Both are fairly easy to set up even for ppl like me, so it should be a sinch for you.

Good luck with the gigabyte!!
