View Full Version : Does anyone use HD coolers or another solution?

I was thinking about switching to HD coolers for my next rig build, and mounting them in the 5.25" bays... But many of the HD coolers I've seen just don't seem to cool the HD that much. I would be easy to get a case where I can mount the HD's in the bottom of the case with the front intake fan blowing over them, but that's where I currently have my Aquacoil H20 radiator installed in my current case... So, I'm thinking about simply mounting them in the regular 3.5" bays or even 5.25" bays and then modding the case to place a quiet 80mm fan directly in front of them blowing air into the case. (This is of course if I stick with a fairly normal mid-tower case - if I go for something exotic all bets are off.)

The Antec SX 10xx cases have a fan in one of the drive cages. Also look at the EZ swap (http://www.vantecusa.com/ezswap.html) I'm thinking of getting one.

You may want to look into a Bay Cool 3. (http://www.pcpowercooling.com/products/cooling/drive/bay-cool/index_bc3.htm) You can fit three drives in two 5.25" bays. I put a higher CFM fan in mine to deal with the heat from three X15 Cheetahs but it does a decent job with the stock fan.

I use drive coolers too. (That baycool3 thing is awesome, i could have really used that a few months ago).

Drives are more likely to fail in high temperatures. In fact, I've had two fail in the past month due probably to summer heat.

I just spent $60 on some extra drive coolers now for my gigabit file server. Got them from 2cooltek.com, have a large aluminum heatsink with two little 40mm fans. Quiet and not that powerful, but quiet and enough to do the job :)
