Hey Gang, Just installed a new PC at a business. They have a network set up for 3 PC's, A sever with the business software on it, and two computers that have access to the server to run the business software. The new PC I'm putting in has XP Pro. The server has 98. The problem I'm having is that I can't get the Network setup wizard to detect the server. When I click on My Network Places it will bring up all computers EXCEPT the server. They are running DSL with a Netgear router. I can surf the net, no prob. I just can't see the server on the network. Also, the PC that I'm replacing has 98 on it too. Under My Computer, the C: drive of the server is Listed as the F: drive for this PC. The only PC that has the business software on it is the sever. The other two PC's access the software through a desktop icon that takes them right to the server. The long and short of it is I need to get this new PC set up to access the server. Any Ideas?

You can access directly using run:

\\servername

or

\\server_ip

Yuo can also try the net use x: \\servername under dos

make sure that both the server and the xp workstation have NetBIOS enabled under TCP/IP settings.

Usually there are big problems using the 'browse' network things across nt and non-nt boxes. Typing the servername directly, or the ip, almost always works.

Player, bro, I don't know what you do, or what you get paid, but it AINT ENOUGH!! I will give these things a try. The thing is, I can hook up the old pc in place of the new one, and it sees the server just fine, so it has to be one of these funky settings that need to be enabled on the new one. Thanks again and I will keep you posted.
