What have been really irking me off to no end is.... why do newbies who start posting keep having this mindset that they are about to be flamed, even if the post was as valid and as good as any pro out there?
Is there some kind of trend in forums where all newbies are supposed to get flamed first before they can move on?
Kinda like my uni life, ragging...;)
Do pros really instill fear in newbies?
If that's the case then I believe there are many other newbies who want to learn but are afraid of being flamed. I mean some people can be mean and belittle you.
just my 2cents...
To all those newbies (including yours truly, ME:D ) never let any1 tell you that you will be flamed for asking.
edit* : my WUs are shooting up! In another 10 years, I may be no. 1 on the F@H list

Why do you think we get so many new faces here all the time? As long as I'm partly running this board, I want to make darn sure that people can come here and ask any question they want without getting reemed. And if they accidently break one of our rules, we'd rather give friendly reminders than brute punishment.
There are a lot of people who take this hobbie to seriously, and need to feel good about themselves by putting others down, or preaching that they know it all. Hey, thats life I guess. People turn things in to a competition, and egos get inflated. Sometimes its all about money. People who can afford to buy the latest video card and computers or cooling systems, or people who have so much free time that they can spend hours maticulously testing a CPU or a cooling system.
I don't want to badmouth other sites, except to say that there are some really good ones out there, and some really bad ones. And we try to do our best. But we aren't going to try to please everyone either.
Every time I visit another site, and then come back here, the difference is sometimes like night and day. The people we get here are usually so much more tolerant and willing to share ideas. And yeah, we have debates and disagreements, but thats half the fun.
And this is a hobby, this is supposed to be fun. I talk to a lot of people doing reviews, or manufacturing things, and for many of them, the fun is getting zapped out of the hobby as well. You take away the fun, and what your left with is just work. And a bunch of overly critical people poking their noses in just to tell you how much you suck. Thats not a hobby. Thats a jail sentence.

I'd agree with this. In general, however, I seem to find that more sites than not have difficulty retaining noobs. I beleive it all comes down to the "core" group of individuals who are the foundation of the forums. If the forums are open and tolerant from the start, it only serves to attract others who appreciate that and perpetuate it. I really feel this is how the LN "community" has come to be a welcome place for many beginners.
To all of those "beginners" out there just lurking, come on in and feel free to post. We won't bite, and we never laugh. It's all about sharing ideas and learning things together:)

Ya know, back in the beginning I only posted kind of well thought out questions because i was afraid of not being accepted into the fold, so i joined SETI and crunched HARD and FAST thinking that would give me a foothold to branch off from being i had only posted 2 or 3 times in another BBS ever (NM) and after "feeling" you guys out it became clear that you don't need to impress anyone here to feel and be accepted like some other forums i have visited along the journey.
one perception i have is this BBS is kind of like a really good A.A. meeting for "geeks" except we fully support the addiction!
all are welcome here provided you dont abuse the community like a immature AOL chatroom (well sometimes we like to act like that too:)) but all in all here i am 2000+ posts later, i stopped saying "those people at LN" a long time ago and now i say "we" instead, and I mean it:)
my shoes and socks are off, my feet are up on the coffee table I'm so damn comfortable here.
so come one come all who walk or crawl:) like MDZCPA said, we dont bite! :) (does Liz still bite?) j/k!
well i'm .02 cents poorer and i have to pee now, catcha later!

i've been with LN from the beginning first as a member and then as a moderator and although i keep quiet i do actually go through the boards everyday.
one of the things this board has allways been and hopefully allways will be is informal and friendly, i would say 99% of the time everyones first post is greated by a flood of welcomes and hellos from some pretty big names in overclocking because everyone here from the newest member to the oldest admin wants to show all the newbies and the lurkers that its safe to come in and chat. all advice and questions are welcome as long as they are constructive, and i think this attitude makes this board one of the friendliest out there :)
anyway i'm off to lurk some more :)

The problem is that there are a few big sites that everyone knows about and is prolly a member of which are poorly run and if you ask a question that seems a little newbie-ish you get torn apart by people who think they know everything....this is why newcomers are wary of posting...

Well, I've been here since near the beginning as well. Lurking and learning. This was the first BBS that I ever considered joining.
It was actually amongst the first BBS's I ever looked at really. It was only later that I realized how good natured this forum is.
I hope that in some way I will allways be a newbie, cause the day I'm not, is the day I stop challenging myself with new things.
I dunno if i feel like this is my place as such, but I have allways felt like a welcome guest.
Some months ago now, I got banned from a large engineering site for suggesting that humans probably didn't know "everything" about physics just yet, and therefore we should not try to limit our thoughts to current theories. Just one non obnoxious post and whammo, no more posting. Then I understood how open minded folks are around here.
Cheers all, _UR_:P

dead on guys, been around for a while and LN is like no other forum, the only other forum comparable to LN is pclincs:D
i must agree with p0 and mike, some forums are very bad while others are pretty friendly.
u_r, can't believe u got banned out of there for that. well, then again i seen some places where u state something that will hurt some one's ego and WAMMO! oh well, we got it really cool here.
