i would suggest two things...

1. forum gold
----one gold per post or whatever, then you can have a forum store where people can buy orbs for their names (different colors around your name)

2. being able to view which members are currently looking at a thread, and which members are currently online

there is an example of a forum i like alot... they have those two things i mentioned as you can see

edit: to see #1, just go into any thread where there is a longterm member and he probably has an orb around his name
for #2, at that page i gave you, scroll down almost to the bottom

I don't know about that.
I would rather give rewards for the quality of posts over the quantity.

Ohhh, I was a member of a WC3 forum that did something of that sort. It had three scales by the name, one for time online, a second for total posts, and a third for average time between posting.

It will make it fair when i keep worthless threads going because i cannot sleep
