yea, it turned out to be vertical sync - I though I found something out but it was just because before even WITH v-sync off I still had limits to fps due to refresh rate - at least I fixed that.
Anyway, I'm a numbskull

I'd say your constant 72fps will be because either the vsync or a setting in the game is limiting it. I'm pretty sure that there's a "fpsmax" console command (or maybe its "maxfps"), in halflife/cs.
For the winXP refresh rate problem I've been using a program called refreshlock, you can check it out here: http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rl/
But I've stopped using that now and am just using the setting in the 3.8 catalyst control panel that makes it try to force the desktop refresh rate (among other settings). Its somewhere under the monitor settings, sorry can't remember exactly, still quite new to ATI. :D

Thanx for the link, too.
P.S. - that ATI Refresh Fix is cool, cause if you have any problems with ATI settings you can't change, that program allows you to easily delete all registry at a whim and then just reinstall catalyst

Glad you got it sorted out :)
But in future .. leave your previous posts there! That way others can see what problems you were having and how they got fixed. Now they can only see that you solved it, but won't know what it was in the first place. :)
