I drive a 1986 Honda Civic Standard.
Let me entail to you what this means....
No A/C
No Radio
No Speakers
No Nothing

I have a spare motor and will soon be putting in a tilt steering column, moon roof, etc.

But before next summer... I do need to make an air conditioner.

So after trying to concieve many different ways to build one out of a Dehumidifier or small eneough House A/C unit... It suddenly hit me.

Peltiers are small easy to build for and can cool stuff down.

My question is how will will they cool the air?
How many will I need?
How effecient are they at 12V? ( I would like to run them at max effeciency vs. max power as to save my alternator.)

My inital concept is one of them being mounted in a line on the roof of the car, between the 2 seats with 2 fans blowing rear to front over heatsinks.
To cool the peltiers i was thining of useing the roof of my car as a heatsink. How do you all think this would work?

Also ther is the possibility of installing them in the doors as well.
All comments appreciated.

sorry about the messed up threads... i thought it shoudl rather be in the car forum vs. the computer .... :)

Ive seen similar products.. but I want to build something permant and no maintenance

Hey synth, I didnt look super hard, but it looks like that just blows air over ice to cool it down?
Would be kinda short term especially on a long trip :)

You will find that it would require an enormous number of pelts comsuming outrageous current. It isn't an efficient way to cool a large volume such as a car cabin. Coolers and processors yes but not that scale.

after reading the ad, using mostly spoons....(sorry, Monsters INC.) using frozen icepacks and frozen sodas or waters, the cooling may last for hours. I think its a novel idea since dry ice coolers are super cold and use no electricity theoretically this thing should work like a charm.
paying a buck and a quarter for ice VS MPG with a compressor under the hood, i really like the idea. especially with gas prices nowadays!
use frozen 2 litre bottles of tap water and a little ice and that thing should work great

p.s. any mod or admin would have moved the thread for ya if ya asked:)

They used to use block ice to cool cars before air conditioners...I saw a 40's or 50's truck once that was factory equipped with an insulated box behind the bench seat that had a fan affixed to one side. You would buy a large block of ice, many still had to buy ice blocks for their fridges (iceboxes) back then, so it was easy to find.

well i think sometime this week i am going to give a smaller version a whirl and seee what it might do... just one pelt up in my room w/2 heatsinks.
About the ice idea, i think thats a good idea except that ther e is almost no room which is why i didnt go for the dehumidifier...
