anyone help me with this please?

have my windows 2000 advanced server setup, and it aint sharing the net connection it has.

have ticked the box to share it, and its changed the ip address of the server to 192.168.0.1 but no client machines can see the net connection.

i REALLY dont wanna have to go to the trouble of re-setting this machione up, or making a smoothwall box, so could someone please help!!

analogx.com proxy server works like a charm!! real easy to setup.
or the internet sharing wizard makes disks to run on the clients from the server. the servers IP is the clients gateway. subnet is the same.

Check the client nic setup I had to do a manual setup on the tcp/ip protocol on mine when my router went TU

click the "Use the following IP radio button" and put in 192.168.0.x (x being your choice of 2-254)

Check the subnet on your sharing box and enter that probably 255.255.255.0

enter the sharing box's ip in the Default gateway

and for grins I put the sharing box's ip in the preferred DNS server as well ( although I don't think it's necessary)

hit ok and you should be good to go... you can check the setup by opening a command screen and typing in ipconfig. your pc should return the IP that you specified, if not type in ipconfig / release followed by ipconfig / renew

ok, lemme get this right

in my server i have 2 nics
1. the net connection
2. the network connection

the nic connected to the net is setup to get an ip address automatically from my set top box, and internet connection sharing is enabled.

the nic connected to the network has a static IP of 192.168.0.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 in the default gateway it has 127.0.0.1 (i think, not at home to check)

from what i understand, when i tick the internet connection sharing box, it should just work, but this isnt.

is this setup right, or have i (as usual) missed something

thanks

Remove the gateway from the lan nic, I found that if all else fails disable both nics then bring the WAN nic up, once its going bring up the LAN nic.

Here's a great resource for what you want to do...LINK (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/lansetup2.htm)

But the ultimate in ease and security is to pick up a cheap router. I did the sharing through my server as a temp measure until my replacement router came in the mail...

am tempted to setup a smoothwall machine

can i set the server to act as a bridge easily?

IE the internet connected to the smoothwall, connected to the server, connected to the network

i know this isnt the best way to do it, but i havent got wireless and the hub is upstairs, i really dont want any more cables lying around the house

cheers

Why do you run Advanced server if you only choose to use ICS?
The "proper" way to do it would be to setup NAT, network address translation.

That will give you full control over how the entire network traffic flows through the server.

ICS is the easy out method.... which i am guilty of as well. Im far too lazy to set the above up... but I would.... really! If i wasnt lazy.

What is it like to not be lazy anyways?

only reason i run advanced server is got i have copy from where i work.

if i knew anything about networking, i might have a go at setting up NAT, but as i know naff all about it, i wont!
