View Full Version : t'bread or palamino??
Right,
am buying a new board (gigabyte GA-7VRXP) and an xp1800+
question is, do i get the palamino core, or the new t'bread core. i am using a taisol 760 with dual ys-tech fans on it, ansd want to overclock it quite a lot.
so which is better. also, which is easier to unlock??
lemme know

Right now it is too early to be certain about much concerning the TBreds...but here's what we do know:
The 1800 TBred was tested by Hard OCP here (http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzIw) with great overclocking success. They were able to get a stable 300mhz overclock out of it and able to run a full suite of bench tests at 1.830ghz....not bad at all. And that was with just good air cooling. Apparently the need to keep the temps at or below 155F was the key to keeping the chip stable.
As far as unlocking is concerned, unlocking the TBred is a little easier than unlokcing the Pally...just a little. The Pally required filling the laser pits with super glue (or another non conductive substance) and then connecting all 5 L1 bridges.
The Tbred requires the same pit filling and the connecting of the 1,3,5 L3 bridges. So I guess that's 2 bridges less to have to connect.
Cooling will be very important with the TBred as the smaller die surface has less area to transmit heat to the heatsink, so temps on the Tbred are up a good bit.
Last, make sure your motherboard has an available BIOS to support the TBred...I'm sure it does, but you never know and should double check.
Hope this helps.
hmmmmmmm,
ok, 2 more questions. . . .
whats 155 in celcious???
what sort of overclocks are the pally xp1800's getting???

155F is 68C. Thats F-32 * 5 / 9 hehe. My gf and most of the OC community uses C, but I use F, so i can almost do the calculations in my head now ;)
I think this business of the TBreds not being good overclockers is a bunch of malarky. Even if they dont overclock as well as the Palamino...you STILL end up at a higher overall clock! So, if you want the fastest chip...go tbred.
If you want my unlocked XP2000+ which can do well over 2000mhz easy, ill trade it for a new XP2200 if you like ;)

Yeah but what does that 2000+ do without supercooling;)

I have no idea...never tried it. I dont know if youd condsider 20-25c super cooling anyway.. :)
come on lads, money burning a hole in me pcket and no one giving me an answer!!!!!!!
pally or t'bread, which is gonna overclock better and which am i going to get a better overclock out of

Your best overclock is going to come from an XP 1800+, whether its a Pally or Tbred. The Pally 1800s (1.533) easily hit 1750 on air, and the TBred's seem to do just as well but run a little hotter doing it.
BUT...
Given the ridiculous low price of XPs, I'd get a XP2000+ Pally right now. It will hit 1800mhz on air easy. And since the prices have fallen quickly since the TBreds came out, this is likely your best bang for the buck now.
The Tbred 2200+ are neat, but they do not overclock as well. At $212 USD , they sure are a great deal for the flagship AMD chip, but only expect a 150mhz overclock on good air.
My vote: 2000+ Pally...band for the buck
BTW, avoid the 2100s, they cannot be unlocked without taking a dremel to the chip.
hmmmmmmm,
cant really stretch to the XP2000+ at the mo. to be honest, apart from seti and RC5 i dont need the extra power so it would just be a waste of money. if i did want one, it would mean buying a mobo now, and the CHIP next month or something, and i want it NOW!!
looks like a XP1800+ pally for me then :D

The XP1800+ Pally is not a bad choice my friend:) Tbreds aren't doing any better (at least not yet) and the Pallys are cheaper for sure.

So, there isn't that much of a performance diff between the Pal's and the Tbreds atm? Just asking because the prices of like an 1800XP for example seem ridiculously low and I cannot hold off on upgrading to the DDR-RAM standard any longer! :2guns:

As far performance is concerned, there is no difference between the 1800+ Palimino and the Tbred 1800+ clock for clock. Aside from the die shrink, there were really no significant changes with the move to the Tbred.
As far as overclocking, they are about the same. HardOCP got their hands on a Tbred 1800 which did overclock as a % much better than the XP 2200 have been doing. However, even then, the current XP 1800 Paliminos overclock just as well.
Now this could change (and is likely to) when newer steppings of the Tbreds come out and AMD hones the .13 process. But for now the 1800+ Palimino is cheaper and does great with it's mature steppings.
This is all my humble opinion of course:)

Just found this over @ Tom's Hardware, and he says the same thing: :)
I actually tested the 'Thoroughbred' Athlon XP in a desktop system to see how it compares to the current Athlon XP processors based on the "Palomino" core. I am afraid that there is absolutely no performance difference! The new "Thoroughbred" is only running a lot cooler than "Palomino."

Hmm... Think I'll go for an XP 1800 then. To be honest I don't think you can compare the 2200's to anything (as far as OC goes), as people over at [H] and a # of different places have had a heck of a time OC'ing them - I think that they are an anomally.
Thanks for the info. :)

P.s. - an 1800 XP Palamino is available over @ Newegg in OEM version for only 90$! - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=226&manufactory=1028&DEPA=1
