hello all.. i just got another SLK-900A/Vantec Tornado 92mm combo for my Asus A7N8X-DLX/AMD 2500+ setup...while i was placing the huge/heavy SLK-900A..I chipped the Die :( on the edge(tiny scratch)...but the computer posted fine.. and i ran 2hrs of Prime 95 to check the Die..everything is workin fine at 200X11 ..(happy:D )..but my Idle temps with SLK-900A/tornado are 41C  ..earlier with Vantec aeroflow they were 38C..

do you guys think its the Chipped Die responsible for high idle temps..or i should try to re-placing the Heatsink?

thanks all

Chipped die isn't the end of the world, thankfully I've never done it "YET" but I have had a number of old Tbirds, and Durons with slight chips and the all ran fine. As for your temps, a slight chip or nick shouldn't change temps at all.

A few things come to mind, first I see you picked up the new Clip on :( might be more convenient but thats an awfull large piece of HSF to hold on by socket clips.

Performance, or lack of, my best guess would be poor contact, any chances you have a small piece of the core sandwiched in there? Either way, I would clean it off, reapply TIM, and remount. Hopefully it is poor contact, and not poor pressure due to LARGE HSF on clips.

Tweak: Final note, if you haven't already lapped your SLK900 bases you might want to give that a shot. Mine was pretty rough out of the box, 30 minutes and a sheet or two of sandpaper later, remount netted me -4c from factory to lapped condition...

thx Ruantic :). Well...i tried re-mounting the heatsink.. and now the computer won't boot..and it gives low pitched police sirens :( .. do you know what does that mean? i checked beep codes at the phoenix technologies site.. And you are right about the poor contact between the SLK-900A and Die..the thermal compund doesn't leave a good impression..i'll try again :(

Just swapping around the HSF shouldn't cause any post problems, Unfortunately maybe you've caused more damage to the core, or the damage was worse then you initially thought and you've now got a dead processor:( only other thought as to how you might have a problem would be to much TIM, maybe smeared on the chip, if its AS3 there is a chance for a short, although it is unlikely... possibly knocked something else on install of the 900? I guess my first guess and the most unfortunate would be you've now done your core in:( :(

yeah..maybe.. but it posts fine on the Asus board and the Bios CPU temps are 39C with Vantec Aeroflow.. if i can get into Bios.. that means the CPU is fine..right?

hmm..maybe its DEAD :( ..damn here i go Barton shopping again.. this willbe my 5TH Barton  (**mom..can i get some money..:P ** )

If its ok on the Asus I would guess its not the processor then. Cleared the cmos? in/out of the processor may have given you a bit of corruption, try clearing cmos, if nothing remove battery and clear cmos, give a different processor a shot in your Abit. Hopefully that huge hunk of copper didn't put a strain on the processor socket and fudge something up there... and of course check the normal stuff like power connections, ram seated well, vid card, front panel header for correct connects, etc...

I just assumed this was your Asus system....

thx again :)

one last note, a temperature comparison with 2 different boards wouldn't be valid, you would need to compare both HSF on a single board. So if your not doing that i wouldn't worry to much about the differential... Good Luck hope all the hardware is ok.
