This it my first attempt at both water-cooling and composing an article.

I hope you enjoy the article as much as I did putting it and the project together.

Yea - the first layout kinda sucked, but it served my purpose for the time.

Hi Kabooka, just read it....great write up. D2D is something I have flirted with the idea of for some time...never had an athlon "spare" as such. I will be keen to hear of its longevity over the next months. Does anyone know what metal the die is made of and is the discolouration actually rust?

The discoloration isn't rust, it looks like the reflections you get from and oil sheen in water. It doesn't wipe off or anything...

There are a few reasons why direct die cooling won't work and has not been introduced in the waterblock market.. let me state it the way i heard it..

the die itself will absorb the water sooner or later. Longest it had was 6 months from a friend of mine... water forced in sraight from the middle of the chip! (yours could probably take longer because the force is not that strong towards the die itself).

the surface area is also less than a waterblock so, I believe it will not beat any good waterblock out there. (however, it is cheap)

so, I suggest you remodify your project by adding a very thin copper sheet at the die around it and seal it again with silicone.
Unless you had a spare chip and just wanted to see how long it will work out?

just my 2cents.

i think innovotec did a commerical direct die cooling block but it flopped massivly.

i ran direct die for many months with water jetting straight onto the core with no problem, a guy named jozzer did it even longer than me. the biggest problem was calcium build up over time.

i agree about the surface area, i'd think a copper memory cooler or something would help no end :)
