I was wondering if you have a hub uplinked to a router does the hub become in effect a router? I have my DSL going into my router and then I uplinked my hub to one of the ports on the router. I just noticed that when I was transfering MP3's from my server to my main box the router was banging away. I thought since the two computers were on the hub the router would be doing nothing. Unless it was just the hub broadcasting to all open ports?

Hi Fara,

When your line goes from a router to a hub, each port on the hub has it's own IP address.

So if you have a 4 port hub, you have 4 IP address available, etc.

You can run up to 256 systems off of router/hub combo, each having their own IP address.

Does that answer your question?

Take care.....

I've been led to understand that a router is basically a smart hub. A hub broadcasts the data to all computers on the hub not just the computer that requested the data. A router has a routing table identifying each computer and can send requested data to the machene directly.

Now what you're saying is that the router addersses each port so the router can identify each computer on the network. So per router you have 256 boxes connected if you uplinked enough hubs.

If I'm right then yes you answered my question. It's been a while since I was in school and I wish I had the money to go back for more classes. I learned so much there, unforutunely I also learned that they don't like people with long hair and even if you had the grades to be on the honor roll they might not let you on. :(

They would like me better now. No more long hair so I can blend in better and cause more havok from the inside :D

fara,
just a tidbit of info... before mike comes.. :D
I know a switch acts like a router, it searchs the 8ports looking for the info and if it cannot find it there it go's to the "uplink port" I don't know if this would work or not.. but if you had ur computers hooked into the 8ports then ur dsl into the "uplink" maybe that would work.. don't know..

Also... i don't know if this applys to hub's but i know there's some sort of switch rule like 2-2-2. Basically u can only have 2 switchs hooked together before u have to use a hub, then another switch.

Personally i would use a switch.. 10Mb compared to 100Mb or 200Mb in full duplex.. no comparo there.

Basically i just wanted to get my .02c in before mike got here.:D

Accually I think what I have now is a little bit of overkill. I have my KT7-R @950 as a server and my A7v266-e as my main box. I have a Westel DSL modem connected to a netgear RP114 4 port router and my DS104 4 port 10/100 hub uplinked to the router. More than I need but the price was right and I could'nt resist. It's great when I have to fix my friends computers. I can just hook them up to the KVM and plug in the cat5 and normally they're right on.

I was just wondering if I would be better connecting directly to the router. Not that it would be a noticable difference but it would make me feel better ;) You know, it's just faster
