This is something that annoys me. Ok, I built a new rig, in it I placed a lovely new Samsung 52x24x52x CD-RW. My drive was literally built a couple of months ago. It's advertised as writing CDs at 52x so you'd expect it to do so right?

Well it doesn't ... nope it only writes at 40x until you download a firmware upgrade to make it write at 52x. How can they get away with selling a CD-RW (or any hardware) that doesn't do what it's supposed to do right out of the box? I'd have thought that was false advertising or something. I could almost understand if the drive was built a while ago, but even then the drive should be supplied to run at the specifications listed without the need to screw around.

/end rant

Are you sure there wasn't some special method for enabling the extra speed? For example: my Sony 52X write won't write at 52X unless you hold down the eject button for 4 seconds prior to loading the disc.... Otherwise the highest it will write is 40X. Also worth asking: are you using 52X discs?

Simple questions that some may overlook I suppose ... but not me :p

Yes the media is rated to burn at 52x and no their are no magical buttons to press to enable the full potential of the drive. I updated the firmware to the latest version, released a week or two back and now the drive burns at 52x as it should.

BTW Notor this is not limited to Samsung branded drives, when I had my LG 48x it wouldn't write at 48x until I updated the firmware also.
