Ok, this question pertains to my 1989 chevy 1500 2wd truck.

My brakes were working pretty good around wensday of last week, I could do a brakestand, and the front brakes would hold the truck still while the rear brakes wouldn't engange.

The whole time my rear brakes haven't been working to good, but that isn't too big of a deal, since my truck has almost no weight on the rear tires anyways, and I usually downshift to help slow down.

Now, the last couple of days, I have been driving my truck, and the brakes seem to not work that good (cannot lock the front tires If I slam on the brakes), and I have a pulsating feeling in the pedal and throughout the truck as if my front break pads are totally gone and I am grinding the rivets on the rotors.

So this morning, I took my front pads off. The right side pads looked like they had about 3/4 life left on both pads. These pads were raybestos lifetime warranty pads. Now, on the left side, the inner pad was worn down most of the way, and the outer pad was barely worn at all. Then, upon closer inspection I found that the back side of both rotors have tons of what look like valleys and the surface is like that of a piece of broken cast material. I put on some different pads, because I had them sitting around, and I thought maybe the material on those pads ruins the rotors. So as I was driving today, I still have the same symptoms, and I can no longer do a brakestand. The truck just starts moving forward, or if I slam on the brakes, the engine bogs really bad and then dies due to the rear brakes engaging.

I am going to try bleeding the brakes again. The last time, bleeding the left rear seemed to firm up the pedal and get the front tires to lock. Two of my bleeder screws are so rusted in, that I cannot get them loose. Do you guys have any other ideas as to what could be the problem, Especially the wierd wear on the back face of the rotors. I do not ever remember through the truck's whole life it having been driven with pads worn down to the rivets.

Thanks guys for any help.

BTW, my truck has rear abs only, do you think that could have something to do with this?

I need to get my brakes fixed so I can lead my friends off during school registration. We are going to take all our cars and try to cover the whole school in tire smoke.

2 things bud, #1) anti-lock brakes need to be bled in a perticular sequence, please ck manual for correct sequence JIC,
#2) premature INNER pad wear is usually caused by either a binding caliper piston due to rust OR a bad brake hose.

the damage to the rotor also needs to be addressed ASAP.

for those who want to know, premature OUTER pad wear is usually caused by poorly lubricated caliper guide pins/bolts.

white grease has allways been my friend in over 10,000 brake jobs in my life. yes 10,000, i worked for Midas for 6 years, started out on the floor and a few years later i managed 3 of them (not at once). believe me i've done my share!!

rule of thumb, if the hoses are 3 years old or more...replace them.
the inner walls tend to breakdown and cause a "check-valve" effect.

also since i mentioned it, with anti-lock brakes, most manufacturers require that you pump the brakes at least 15-30 times before filling the master cylinder, check the resiviour or its cap for details.
have fun :)

Thanks a lot for the advice, I kinda figured i'd get some help from the midas man. I did grease the pins, me and my friend are going to bleed all 4 corners on tuesday.

Well, my friend stopped by in his bonneville toneight, and his is ready for the fun. Oh yeah, we got a dedicated picture taker to take pictures of the smoke cloud. So once we fix my brakes, mine should be ready. So we will have at least this much burnin the tires: 86 bonneville, 88 4 runner, 89 1500, 97 sc'd F150, and whoever else we can get to. Its going to be awesome, our school is very big though, so I donno.

You just need to know the area wes. I Know, I hate civics, and I'm actually happy I got rearended by that neon. Now I can talk smack to every neon owner. Neon rearending my truck at 30mph = my truck having a bent and scratched rear bumper, and a totalled neon. w00t :D

I must tell you, bring a couple gallons of clorox bleach to pour all over the spinning tires, it triples the smoke and lessens the tire wear.
but i never said that ;)

And just to help a bit, for the weaker cars in the mix, toss in a bit of 10w40 just to get things started.

And for the die hard there's something called a mico brake lever FOUND HERE (http://www.angelfire.com/tn/hamman1/mico.html), We used to hook it up to the front brake circut. You flip the lever to lock and pump the brakes once or twice. The front brakes are now parking brakes until you flip the lever the other way. The nice thing is that your not wearing out the rear brakes in the process and the engine isn't working to overcome that friction.......

another car to add, an eagle talon. Well, all the cars we have can get them going. I just tested my truck half an hour ago in a pick n save parking lot, and it got the one tire nice and toasty really fast.
after 20 seconds, I had a really nice cloud going. So my truck is reay for fun.

i second the bleach, and also i'm a big fan of skinny bias-belted tires, i remember many junkyard runs for old tires to smoke, in my experience these made a hella lotta smoke :)

sometime I think I might add a line-loc so I can fix my rear brakes.

which reminds me, we do need to do a junkyard run for some brake stand tires. FYI: we're taking pictures :D

I plan on it.

Thursday nobody really wanted to, and all the FINE ladys had left already, so I just did one myselft. I covered the whole football field and track in tire smoke. It reeked of burnt rubber for like 15 minutes. Amazingly my tire still has SOME rubber left. WEEEEE, I need to finish off my rear tires before I put on different ones.
