View Full Version : Networking Windows98 to WindowsXP

Hey guys.

Just wondering, is it possible to run a "network" with one computer running Win98 and the other running WinXP? I'm sure it is and many of you have done it, but how easy is it? I dont have a huge amount of time to spend on doing it!

WinXP is running on an NTFS disk, and Win98 is running on a FAT32 disk, if that makes any difference?

Thanks :)

What are you trying to accomplish, besides trying to get both computers to see one another? I can see and access files on my Win98 computer, but not vice versa as Win98 cannot access NTFS drives.

exactly that! hehe

I need to be able to see the files on the WinXP box, from the Win98 box... is there any way round it?

Have an old harddrive laying around?
Put it in the XP machine and make it FAT32.

my last spare HD went in the Win98box.. lol

Are there any partitions on the XP box?

no (not yet ;)).... But you just gave me and idea for the solution! I have 2 other HD's in the XP box - I only need to see the files when I need to tranfer them to the win98 Box.... one of the HD's is set up as a FAT32 system.... can just move the files when I need to transfer them... (cant beleive i didnt think of that already!)

And also, how would I go about settting up a partition on that drive?

Just one last question  - if i want to share the internet connection I have on the XP box with the 98Box, is that possible??

Thanks :D

Unless you want to buy software I don’t think you can create a partition within XP. But you can format the whole drive and make it FAT32, be sure to copy everything that's on it first.

I don't know much about sharing internet.:(

Ok - thanks for the help WC :D

You'll need another NIC to share your connection with the Win98 system. Just bridge the connection :)

BTW, if you're looking for some hard drive management software check out Partition Magic (http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/). You can do anything with it, and many times it will be sold with mail-in rebates that make it free.

huh? i never had any problems with a hybrid network, or sharing ntfs files or folders i dont remember having any problems over a network. fat32 OS cant see an NTFS partition in the same pc. if 98 couldnt see ntfs over a network, almost every client/server network would be worthless :)
if you want any help setting it up or sharing the internet lemme know, its one of my specialties :D
also 2nd nic not really needed, just a hub with all plugged in to it!

You can read NTFS from Fat* and vice Versa, but a Fat* operating system (or one that was formatted as such) cannot make any changes whatsoever to a NTFS partition. An NTFS partition on the other hand can do anything it damn well wants to :D

OK to answer the question YES they will be able to see each other, make changes back and forth, and yes you can do it between Win98 and WinXP! I am a network administrator and we have a working hybrid in our center that has Win98, Win ME, Win 2000, and Linux and they ALL share files back and forth! You see Windows creates a "Virtual File System" call "SMBFS" and creates SMB shares. This makes the core File System irrelevant to a networked computer. ALL versions of Windows use this Virtual File System all the way back to Win3.11 for workgroups so you could even add in a Win3.11 box for gigles but who wants to. Linux can view and interact with SMB shares on an SMBFS through a SAMBA server which mimics SMBFS and SMB shares. In fact Linux, BSD (All variants), and Unix can use SAMBA.

Come on guys this is general Networking 101 stuff!

Welcome to the board Tek.

You are of course right. I dont think any of the networking guys had a chance to visit this thread yet though :)

This one kinda got on to a real good roll down the wrong hill huh ;)

Oh with that said, there are usually major problems with MS's network browser between NT and 9x machines. I highly recommend a WINS server. Running NetBEUI can help as well. You still may not be able to see some shares from the browser, but you can still get to them with NET USE or simply accessing \\computerX\shareme.

I've been waiting a long time for someone else to do that. Mine usually happen with those damned vote threads.
