KMS,

Probably sounds a bit odd to the rest of the world, but soccer is just not that big here in the US. It has certainly grown in popularity over the last 20 years or so, but interest in soccer pales in comparison to our own version football (NFL).

Surprisingly, though, myself and a few of my buddies have been keeping an eye on the World Cup (which is new for us).

I don't think the US stands much a chance against Germany...but then again...I donn't know diddly about soccer:)

It seems soccer is bad for the world economy (http://www.theinquirer.net/20060209.htm) .

Hi kms,

Rugby, "Football", and Cricket.........

Bout the only ones who play it here are the college teams.

There is some, but not much.

Seems like if it isn't Football, Basketball, or Baseball, we don't seem to have much large scale interest.

AND that is a shame......Rugby, "Football", and Cricket are great sports.

Take care........

crickets ok to play but watching it is really boring... it's one redeaming feature is that you get to sit out in the sun having a drink... oh wait a minute that sounds pretty good actually :)

Lee, where I play roller hockey every sat and sun there are anywhere from 20-75 people playing cricket in the baseball field. I was amazed the first time I saw them. I live one town away from Newark NJ and they come from there to play cricket.

Hi Fara,

Don't get me wrong....There are people that play cricket and such.

What I am saying is it is not widely played in the US, like Baseball, Basketball, and Football.

Go to any playground, and there is usually Baseball, Basketball, and Football being played.

Take care......

Sorry Lee, I wasn't arguing the fact at all. Didn't mean to come off like that. The three you mentioned are the main ones we see in the US. I see a lot more people playing hockey now. I like that a lot. Now I don't have to fight to get enough people to play a game.:)

It also depends where you are in the US. I live in Nutley NJ smack dab in the middle of the NY metro area and I can find people playing allmost any sport. I was hiking in harriman state park and I came up on people rock climbing in the middle of the woods. It's kind of nice to live where there is a mix of people. You get a lot of choices and see new things.

Your right about location Fara:)

Here in Detroit (Hockey Town), the ranking goes:
Football
Hockey
Basketball
Football

Hockey has really come on strong the last ten years.

MrP I hope you are thinking of field hockey. The game where cute girls dress up in pleated plaid skirts and use a crooked stick to hit a ball around the grass. Ice hockey is a WHOLE different animal. It's kind of like boxing on ice sometimes.

It's most certianly a man's game. The girls get to play goalie. :D

This thread has reminded me it's time to go to bed. Got less than 3 hours to sleep if i want to make it to the pub to watch the game and be assured of getting in.

(kick off is 7.30 am in uk, pubs are opening early and will be locking people out ie too full and wont get in before match starts)

So tempted to forgoe the sleep altogether.
