Never been involved in one so I have a few questions:
1) cpu utilization reduces computer speed?
2) 24/7?
3) hacker attack potential?
4) do you believe that have the system running on a continuos basis, reduces the life expectancy of the computer?
5) do we get a case of beer after number crunching for a year?:D
finally
6) which folding party to join? who needs the numbers?

1) Nope, whenever another computer asks for CPU power, F@H gives it up.
2) I run it 24/7 and it hasn't interferred with anything.
3) None that I know of.
4) Absolutly, but chances are you'll upgrade before your computer hits its second decade of life.
5) Only if you ask them, "Pretty please with a cherry on top?"
6) Liquid Ninjas. Team 11899, pick your own username and configure F@H to your needs.

That is so true. My average system last 6 to 8 months:rolleyes:
Why? who the hell knows:P

I think that runing 24/7 is probally better than turning it on and of all the time. Less wear and tear on the mechlnical parts in a system.

I have to agree with farabomb here, except the one down fall is that your electricity bill will go up a little.:2guns: I have a feeling once I get this 3.0 and 1.8 folding on top of what I already have folding my bill is gonna sky up a little bit.:(
But thats the price u pay for a very good cause.;)

1.) Yes, actually but marginal. You will see it affect benchmarks. You wont personally notice it though, because f@h runs as an idle process, like a screensaver. It only runs when your not doing something else. It will eat some memory and poll once in a while, which is why benchmarks will be affected. But I run it on all my machines and its transparent. If your that worried, you can schedule F@H processes to only run at night or something. Try it first, see how it feels.
2.) Yeah, you have to run 24/7 to get best results. Anytime you use the computer its not folding, so letting it fold while your say, sleeping, is the best way to do it.
3.) Not likely. You aren't opening up a port to anything external, and as long as you download the client from Stanford, theres no major risk of infection. F@H will only accept packets from Stanford servers (proxies dont work) so the risk of receiving interference packets is slim, and F@H doesn't execute anythign but some mathematical functions anyway, its not launcing any ActiveX or browsers or anything dangerous like that. Nothing in life is 100%, but the fact that it hasnt been hacked yet sais something...
4.) Yeah, it might reduce the life, especially if its overclocked and running 100% 24/7. But, you will never outlive that CPU. Besides, I have never seen a single CPU die from 'old age'. You'll still have 10 years on that CPU. 10 years ago we were running 386s and 486s. How long did you keep one of those for? :)
5.) I dont like beer.
6.) team 11899.

Well I'm folding and I'll let it run all night for a trial run. Strange thing though when I started it up again.
FahCore_78 was using 99% of my process, which in itself is not a problem. But when I tried to display the genome display, a small black screen appeared - moving the screen around, only created mirroring frames of the window.
I had to shut it down and get it going again.
I assume there is an option to NOT have it fold when I initially boot it up?
BTW
Thanks for the welcome:cool3:

Yup, just move the F@H shortcut out of the start up folder.

Nothing to say really that hasn't already been said, but will reiterate that folding for us would be your best option :D

I prefer the no nonsense console version (if you haven't tried that already).

There was an article by an engineer that was posted on NM way back about how leaving a computer running would actually prolong life-span. I think it stated that the worst thing for a CPU was to heat up/cool down a lot instead of staying at a constant temp. (Anything physical expands/contracts due to heat change.)

ditto, the gui version is slower and not as exciting to watch.
get the console ver. .02

think of it this way, how many times can you bend a paperclip even slightly before it breaks?
