Welcome to the Boards :beerm8s:

Sure - just set up a VPN to your LAN, in XP you can create a VPN in connections, then set up users on the XP box complete with passwords. I forget what port vpn uses but that would have to be opened in your router ( if you have one ). When your friends log on they will be assigned an ip on your lan, and should have access to those things you allow....

can you explain to me how i do that?
i've never used this VPN and i have no idea how i can set it up.
and if i have on hub, will i need to open a port?

VPN would work sure, but it would create SO much overhead that ping times would be hideous for the guys on the internet.

If you have an internal LAN, im guessnig you have a Router/Firewall thing somewhere. All you need to do is open up a game port (port forwarding) on that router that points to the internal IP address of your game server.

For example, me and my wife play games on the internet from our internal LAN, say Unreal 2003. We both have internal 192.168.x.x addresses, but the Router has a port 7777 open to point to my game server at 192.168.0.100 or whatever it might be. To the outside world, that Unreal server port looks like a standard external IP address.

VPN would work in a different fashion, however, the encryption and overhead of tunneling would be terrible for playing games, and everyone would have to set up a VPN client, (or a VPN tunnel on their routers which may or maynot work with yours). Its a mess...dont recommend that at all.

considering i have this kind of configuration:

the person who will create the game has 4 computers conected to him through lan with a hub.
then he has an 56k conection to the internet, so this is where i came in, just me, no one else.
i have an adsl and a router. do i need to set up something or we just have to set the VPN for him and i?

(i know that a 56k would be awful, but it's just for us to try).

I suggested a VPN to limit the unwanteds from jumping in.... I guess I'm anal when it comes to security.

in this case we just need to set o password for joining the game, if the game allow us to do that.

Then I would go with what Player suggests, you shouldn't have to do much more than route the port to the IP of the box serving the game.

VPN encrypts every packet. To prevent unwanteds, all you really need is an authenticate/challenge. The rest of the packets don't matter. If you are having hacknig issues, I would try IPSec first, since it will be much much faster than VPN for gaming. Usually setting a password for a game is good enough, depending on the game server.

this IPsec is a program?
tell me where i can find and how to configure please.

I said faster than VPN, but not necessarily fast without the proper hardware to do this. It's still a waste of time to even try unless you are plagued by hacking attempts (which this may not even cure).

I gave you the correct instructions above. If you want to ignore that and look in to another, exponentially more complicated way of trying to set up an internet game server, then go right ahead. There is no way that I can give you instructions to set that up here because it can be very complicated. There is ton of information of this protocol (not software) online.

Still, I think it's silly to even bother with that.

so, i guess i will try the VPN anyway. i'll lose performance but will gain secutity.
thank you all for helping me, but i need just a little more favor from you. :D
can you help me giving the instructions of how to set a VPN ?

I see no reason to set up the VPN. If you needed to share files or network resources I can understand but you're running a gameserver. Put a password on the server and limit it to as many people as are playing. It's 100% eaisier and there won't be the PING issue. With a 56k pipe you want as much bandwith as you can get. Security is'nt an issue, no one cares who you're fraging ;)

If you're just seting this up to frag your friends do have him run the server and foward the port to the server. I'll be happy to help you with that. :)

"can you help me giving the instructions of how to set a VPN?"

Is this guy kidding? Some people don't listen I guess. Im getting out of this conversation.

wow, and the fact that he wants his friend to run the server when his friend has 56k, and he has a much faster connection to serve with.

"i'll lose performance but will gain secutity"

You'll loose playability and the ONLY security you will gain is people not able to intercept your TCP packets and see your player geometry. Its worthless. Learn how to perform basic routing before you jump in to something advanced like VPN. Theres an idea.

lol, now I am thinking of sometime setting up a vpn between a friend of mine and myself to share files and stuff, but we have much faster connections. And I'm gonna setup a few LN game servers I think.

acctualy, i was not kidding. the thing is that i know nothing about network.

the thing is:

i just want to play counter strike with my friends without having to take my computer to their house.
i really don't care about security, because all i want is to play.

here's the configuration:
I POSTED THIS
the person who will create the game has 4 computers conected to him through lan with a hub.
then he has an 56k conection to the internet, so this is where i came in, just me, no one else.

if this is possible, i really need to know if there's an easy way, like install a program, configures it and then start to play, or else i'll give up on trying to play like this.

Okay, thats fine then. I gave instructions on my first post on this thread. You just need to open a port forwarding on the router. What specific question did you have?

from a fresh POV, when your freind signs on to the internet, he must find out his assigned IP address, tell it to you, have him start a game server, and you enter multiplayer game mode and find available servers, if his is not listed try to find a way to type it in yourself (his ip address,) and hopefully you should connect and be able to play. fwiw being you have the faster connection to the net, you should run the server and have him connect to you :)
usually on a 56k dialup, his isp isnt interested with his security, first try to ping his broadcast ip, if you can, chances are you will connect through the game, good luck

i try to connect to him but the ping was at 2000 ms.
it was impossible to play, and we tried to do the second way you said but the thing is that my father won't open a port on the router because he's a little worried about everything and without doing this we can't connect to each other, but thanks anyway.
