Finaly got my system together cost £600 roughly heres the specs

2400 amd athlon
asus a7n8x deluxe
Logitec 5.1
80gb Western Diggy 8mb Cache
2x 256mb DDR400 Twinmos
9500 Sapphire (i intend to mod to a 9700)

i got a few problems,

first of all i noticed sata is BAD! it was no faster and even seemed a little slower. i tested this using a friends sata hdd.

main problems are

when the pc starts up windows xp loads but no programs start for about 30 seconds, ie opens blank windows untill all the programs start at once.

the second is when the pc shutsdown it resets instead and this is soo anoying, any ideas on how to solve this. also does anyone have any infomation about softmodding 9500 non pros sapphire.

Hi Superfly,

Let me try, well.... you can't see big difference between SATA and ATA in these days because the boards are still limited to the 133 MB/s on PCI channels.Using another board, like server boards with 266 MB/s on PCI, probably you can see some better numbers on Raid0 option, but don't expect large differences bettween SATA and ATA in the first generation.Second generation of SATA are coming and can offers 300 MB/s.Together with this, probably in the next year we will can get mobos with a new PCI-X brigdes.PCI-X will use serial brigdes too..Remember that mobos today use a parallel bridges. The only chipset that are using SATA in the different way is Intel.Intel choose to put it directly on the die, but again, don't expect to see big differences btween SATA and ATA..Another thing that we have to think is about Hard Disks.Hds today reach 50/55 MB/s on sustain tranfers rate and when we talk about 150 MB/s on SATA, in the truth we are talking about 150 MB/s on the buffer, and we all know that buffer tend to be empty fast, then the true numbers to consider is 50/55 mb/s on sustain tranfers rate. When using RAID0 option you can expect better numbers than using single Hard disk.

About your main problem, maybe it can be a problem with silicon chipset on ASUS a7n8x deluxe. There is an issue with this. You can try to read something about this in my answer in this
Thread (http://www.liquidninjas.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4484).I'm not sure if this your problem, maybe someone else can help you better on it.

About the 9500 softmod, sorry i can't help you on it, i'm still on Nvidia, but i'm sure you will get help here.

Hope this help you.

Go into Help and Support under Start.
Then select Use Tools under Pick A Task
Select Advanced System Information
Select View The Error Log

Report back what you see there.

The delay problem is caused by a hanging service in XP. The system is hanging until service having trouble times out.

Example: If you have a network cable plugged into the LAN port, but the TCP/IP properties are not properly set and the system cannot connect to the DHCP router, you will experience the delay symptom. In the error log you get an error like "W32Time error".

Check your error log.

But this reset instead of shut down problem still remains and it is sooo anoying now. If cheaked my wires on the mainboard reset wires are all in the right sections. ihavnt heard anything of problems like this on anysite. if i can fix this problem ill have a new bug free system.
finally after a few years of saving up for this.

My harddrive can beat up your harddrive:D

Seriously, others here as well as myself are quite pleased with the stability of our ASUS's.
Each manufacturer has installed unique quirks to all their products which cause us to frequent these forums to put our collective minds together to come up with a solution.
until reading MDZCPA's post to find that part of XP, i would never think to look there.
i hope to find a cure for my "delayed" starting of XP when overclocked. i have much the same symptom with different reasons, I don't think it's because it's an ASUS:D
I will post my errors under seperate thread:cool3:

make sure you follow this install order:

XP
XP SP1
Asus drivers from the CD

Disable any unused hardware in the BIOS such as serial ports, LAN ports (the A7N8X comes with two), etc.

This helps.

Hummm, there was a little thing that came in my mind. Now that you're going to reformat and install the windows again, enable APIC (1.4) in the bios.Keep ACPI enable too.APIC can give you 24 IRQs if i remember it well.Probably this is not your problem, but there's not to lose doing that, you gain 24 IRQS.
