I plan on setting up my first wc unit here pretty soon. Ive got a 2.4C for the project. My problem is it gets really hot in my room, 85F+ almost everynight during the summer. Will the MaxxPert rad be enough to cool this processor off at 3.4GHz, or how bout even at 2.4GHz? I plan on going with a Maze4 or a Swifty. If im reading the info on the MaxxPert it has a 3/8 ID, and this seems like a bottle neck to me. If this wont be enough to cool this beast down, are there any heatercores that are better at about the same size? I can get any welding done for free if needed.

Hi, welcome to the boards :)

My 2.4C gets to 3500-3600mhz air cooled with a quiet Zalman heatsink.

Im not familiar with the MaxxPert radiator, but there are many 1/2" radiators that you might want to consider. If you get the Maze4, maybe pick up a BIX or BIX2 from them. A heatercore is a cheaper alternative, but you have to take care of the mounting, shroud, connector thing yourself.

Pass on the Maxxpert, thats old stock items they are attempting to get rid of, afaik it has been discontinued. Go to Dtek and get there pro core, or Danger den for the Black Ice series, and if your on a budget go get a heater core from an auto parts place.... Any of those would be a much better choice and performance would be greatly improved........

I had thought about the big zalmans or something along the lines of a slk900 but would moving hot air over a heat sink do any good? My 800 Duron is a nice heater currently and was thinking a 2.4 would create more heat than this thing does. As to the BIX or Dtek thats a close call. Both look good, but I wont know if I will even have the money to consider water or not till tomorrow. Get my first paycheck of the summer and boss hasnt said how much of a raise im getting. He gave me an evil grin and told me to wait until I get the stub. Im planning on going with a P4P800 Deluxe, are there any probs with the Maze4 on this board? Also one of my goals is to get a nice quiet system. I am really wanting to be able to quit using the 5" fan blowing into my open case if at all possible. So if I can not afford the water cooling right now could I use the CNPS7k-cu or should I spent the extra $$$ on the slk900? Remember my room gets 85F+ daily. Lets all cross our fingers and hope that there is enough money to rid me of this headache in a minitower. :)

Even wc'ing is affected by ambient temps. Remember, the water will never be cooler than ambient temp unless you are using a chill unit. Water is just more efficient at absorbing and moving heat elsewhere. In this case it would be the rad. With hi ambient temps you want a large and efficient rad or even 2. If you are on a budget, get 2 '87 Chevette heater cores (same as the dtek cores but with different fittings) and run them in series. It would be more efficient and cheaper that getting the bix2.

It would be my vote to get a standard air cooler for your CPU for now, and get a $150 room air conditioner ;)

Agree with Player0. Cool your room down first if you can.

Seems too logical and yes ive thought about this many-a-time in the last few months. The thing keeping me from doing this is im not going to be in this room for much longer. At the end of the summer Im going off to college and expect to need the computers as heaters since I can not stand to be cold. Ive looked at your cold air box a couple times, but the results didnt look all that great for what it took to get them if you would be on budget such as myself. Im thinking I could most likely improve my temps in this case if I did some small updates to my case. I know my cooling in it isnt the best, but ill post those questions in the air boards as they are more appropriate there. Check back in a bit with more info on my rig ideas.

hey khemikal,

as someone who lived in college dorms for four years, i do not think you will need the extra heat that your computer will output. there might be a few days here and there when the cooling or heating will be on the fritz, but usually i would guess your dorm room and building will always be hotter than you would like. it is not good for really crowded places like college dorms to be cold because diseases can spread quickly. anyways when students are sick and cannot go to school or miss classes due to illness or fill up student health services, it poses cumbersome problems for the school...so they make sure buildings are nice warm and similar to a tropical climate. so good cooling is a must if you are overclocking esp in a smallish dorm room.

i agree with ruantic and really think you should avoid the maxxpert. i had mine for a few days before i realized how bad it was and purchased a BIX. it was definitely a waste of money. if you are intent on buying a maxxpert monorad, i will sell you mine for half the price you can find one for. but i will flat out tell you, it is not a really good performer.

stick to a bix or a dtek and you should be fine. if you have some imagination and some powertools, you should definitely try using a heatercore. i think i am leaning towards a heatercore soon because i am now home and have access to powertools. the price is cheap, time spent on doing such a project is highly rewarding when your peers at college are jealously throwing looks of awe upon your computer.

if you are not sure about doing WC quite yet, i have used a thermalright slk 800 and it was the best air colling solution i have ever used. not as much OC headroom or as quiet as WC, but definitely the only solution i would use for air cooling.

btw, which college are you headed for? good luck on your cooling choice!

Here's a quick shot of my Chevette heater core - not too bad for $16 and change...

Well things hit the fan, pun not intended, yesterday. Talked to my boss and I am not going to be able to get a nice WC unit so Im going to have to live on air till next summer :( My stepdad however has mentioned helping me out on this box if possible, but wont pay for WC. Back to the question on air, ive got a Volcano 2 on my Duron and a 5" fan blowing directly onto my mobo. My case is very small, so I can not drop many fans into it, Im thinking on 80-92 for intake, and a 80-92 for exhaust. The exhaust is right next to the cpu so its not at the very top. The movement of air across the mobo and cpu like this should be better than my current setup of backflow from the big fan would it not?

As a side note my A7V133 is starting to crap out on me after having it for forever and a day. Ive reinstalled Windoze so many times its not funny. Did you know its possible to have a BSOD before windows is installed fully!? I have had this board since it first came out and finally got around to flashing the bios on it a couple weeks ago. Ever since its been downhill. Is there a problem with burning a computer in on a bios for so long then changing it? I used Asus utils and a nonbeta bios from their site for the flash so it is either just old age for the mobo, or just old age.

foment: Im heading out to University of Kentucky doing CS, looking around at HSF units for P4s and yes the slks are my top picks with the mcx close in third.
