thanks guys, i have a question thought...is it me or is the IT sector looking really hard to break into??? I just spoke to mate of mine who did a geography degree and he has a job paying 20k already!! I am only on 16k at this place...but then there dont seem to be many other jobs going and those that are are really competitive to get into...

The IT sector has to be the hardest sector to break into, in todays age everyone needs to know a fair deal of IT from an even younger age so getting a job in the sector is damn hard as everyone knows some form of IT. I don't have a degree in IT, I have an A-Level in Computer Science and various other minor certificates and it was a major pain for me to get into the IT sector (and this was years ago!). In fact I only managed to get into an IT job be sheer luck. I was working as a screen printer and the business had a fair amount of computers hooked up which needed maintaining they were going to hire an IT guy when (as luck would have it) I sorted out a problem they were having ... gues who became IT guy? :D Then after a year of that I was able to move around the sector a little easier.

A bit late to the thread, but congrats on the degree and the new job!

Wow...where are you? 16 or 20k for an IT job is way on the low side, up where I am anyway. But I'm sure it varies depending on where you are (and I honestly don't remember where that is) :)

IT is extremely tough to break in to right now, only because there are soo many other people with experience out of a job. You'll just have to keep your name out there and be in the right place at the right time.

What kind of work are you doing?

nitan
06-21-2003, 02:30 PM
in the UK (Reading) mate...things are looking really tuff out there at the mo...hopefully i will get my experience up and then be able ot move onto bigger and better things...this is mostly a tech's job at an XBox games testing facility....so basically will be doing some comms room work, TCP/IP trouble shotting...setting up labs for testing, making sure all the work station are running and stuff like that really...nothing too taxing...as i say its only to keep me in the green while i find somin better really...also will be using it as a chance to make some inroads and contacts in the industry who may be able to help me out along the way...its a start i guess...

P0- remember, thats 16K pounds, not US currency... I would guess he's between 26-32K in US funds, which is about right for entry level.

Nitan- congrats ma bizzzotch!!! I remember that juttery feeling I had when I started working too.... just try too chill out a bit & enjoy it... you've worked hard to get here :drinky: j/k ;) Seriously... I dunno about the tech sector, but in the science field the best advice I can give is to just enjoy work... meet some new people, get to know the field... and eventually you'll find something specific you want to do. At that point... it's much easier to pick a path to eventually getting there. anyways, good luck & congrats :)

Ahh, UK.

Plus the rates over there are MUCH lower than over here for pay, because it is socialist or something. you have more paid for you. So, thats probably even more like 35k-40k here. So, in fact, thats pretty good for entry level.

nice one a degree and a job all in one week - things dont get much better :D

and 16k for an entry level job would be great up here in the far north ;) graduates are lucky if they get a 13k job

well done on the degree mate,

does seem its tougher to get into the IT industry now a days.

I didn't have a problem but that was before the current climate.

friend of mine took a techy job just to get something, he got 16k or so he was but it didn't take long to get a better salary once he was a known comodity.

dicki
06-26-2003, 08:48 AM
yeah IT is harder to get into nowadays, everyone and his brother did comp sci a few years ago and flooded the market cos it looked like easy money... i'm kinda half thinking about going back to do a phd cos the markets so bad!

evilmatt
06-26-2003, 08:52 AM
dr dicki ;)

money for phd's isn't too bad supposedly 15k in some places

but then thats tax free so not a bad wage for hanging around drinking coffee all day ;)

nitan
06-26-2003, 09:00 AM
ah but then u hit the last year, ands its all running around like a headless chicken to get all ur shit done....then viva's and what not...i dunno i'll see how things turn out at this place...i am still gonna be looking in the meantime as i say so if anything better comes along then i will jump at the chance...especially if its a grad scheme or somin...bloody comp sci student clogging up the place...

sounds like the byrnie approach to project managment, finish it on the day of the external assesment while the examaner is looking at other peoples stuff ;)

he nearly pulled it off as well.

btw you need to change your sig m8 :D

or do you have to wait till the silly hats cerimony I forget ;)

nitan
06-26-2003, 11:59 AM
Silly hats i'm affraid :( but thats soon enough...

evilmatt
06-26-2003, 12:18 PM
when we did the silly hats it was boiling, wearing all that get up was most uncomfortable.

there was also some argument about what bits of ridiculous capes and so on we needed to wear it being the masters 1st degree and not master 2nd and so on.

we all looked daft tho maybe I'll dig out the picture with me minty_altoid and dicki + all the other cyb reprobates in full silly hat gear

maybe keep it as blackmail material ;)
