My P4 2.0g Northwood based laptop is showing some issues with 3d. I have not been able to iron out the bugs. My wife was trying to play unreal yesterday at the lan party. The game runs fine, I can get 80fps out of this laptop if I try. However, after about 5 minutes of playing, the 3d slows to a crawl!!

I installed fresh Cat drivers this morning, and tried to clean the laptop, but nothing seems to correct the issue, and it occurs with ALL 3d applications. The system will not speed back up unless it is restart. Checking process monitor, I notice that the memory looks fine. The FSB and CPU clock are where they should be, and I have CPU throttling disabled in BIOS.

The Radeon 7500 just seems to practically stop working right. It MAY have something to do with Intel Inf version 5 which I recently installed. 3d worked fine before this, but I can't really test that theory without installing windows.

I seem stuck here, Im out of ideas. Any thoughts?

hmmm, have you tried checking for dust? that seems to be an issue with laptops sometimes

Is it overheating? The built in card works heck of alot harder in a 3d app than a 2b app. If it has feet put them down. Put a fan behind it and see if the air flow helps.

Have you tried Reloading it from scratch.

Ive been trying to avoid reloading it from scratch. Dust? Maybe. Ive been debating cracking open the laptop and cleaning it up, adding new thermal paste and stuff.

However, I dont think its over heating because once it starts running slowly, it doesnt come back. ANd its never had the problem before.

When things turn slow, what does Task Manager say you have running? What do memory resources look like?

Memory is clean, running 90m in WindowsXP (I optimizde it a while ago). Services are clean, nothing eating up. I even go in to task man and kill everything and still the slowdowns persist.

Funny note. After i took apart the laptop to look to see how I was going to water cool it, I put it back together...and no more problems. I replaced the thermal pad on the hsf with some AS3. Maybe that old pad was just toast?
