Anyone out there use minidisks? I'm planning on getting either a minidisk or an mp3 player. I don't care too much for mp3's due to the sound quality, but am needing something that won't skip while mt. biking (freeriding/xc). I will be using it to record live music too (main reason for looking at minidisk.) Any thoughts?

I can hardly fit over 100 mp3s on a regular CD with any quality, so the space makes it unattractive for me. If you don't find 20-50 songs on a playlist to be too repetitive, go for it.

I'm hoping someone comes out with a DVD mp3 player soon :D

I have a MP3 player that takes smart media and I have one of the CD based one. The smart media one won't skip but it really lacks the storage space. You go out for a 20mi spin and you'll be hearing the same thing a lot. The CD based one works pretty good but I did buy a crappy RCA one. It crashes more often than win95 and has little quirks like shuting down when it doesn't feel like playing songs any longer.

I'd shoot for a solid state player with CF expansion. A nice 512 CF card should fit qutie a few songs. Oh, and get some recharable battries. The solid state players eat up battries.

Ohh, I wouldn't dream of buying one of these without rechargables now. Even the CD players gobble up batteries faster than you're willing to buy them.

If digital media didn't cost more than the player I'd invest in it. Living with the quarks of a CD player isn't that bad though

i would go with mp3 if you can... I bought a sharp minidisk player and wasn't very pleased. The transfer rates on mp3 are much higher, and the mp3 players are usually a lot cooler. I have a creative mp3 player now with 192 mg memory, it is pretty small and holds a good amount of music... it would be perfect for mountain biking. It has a built in mic, but I'm not sure how long you will be recording for... if it is a long time, then you may have to turn the bitrate down, and hence get lower quality.... but it holds way more than a single minidisk. good luk! I'd stay away from creative if you can... it's good but, it's still creative!
