I have the athlon xp 2100+ (1.6v) and a Nf7-s..
just wondering can you harm you CPU by putting in too much voltage.. assuming temps are below 50?
what iam mainly asking is heat the only enemy of CPUs?

heat is your biggest enemy.
voltage=heat
voltage alone can damage the cpu, but the main problem will be heat.
That said, what sort of voltage you thinking about?
going from 1.75 to 1.85v will do little if any harm to your cpu(talking AMD here), however if you start going above 1.9/2v then the risk of damage rises quickly I think.
But at that voltage you will need very good cooling anyway.

currently iam @ 1.75 @ 30 celcius..
and iam at 10.5x207 = 2173
207 is the limit of my RAM..
at this voltage 2222 is the limt of my CPU..
iam wondering should i put the ram upto 1.8 and see if it will allow me to go any further
Hi Datsin,
I didn't understand of wich voltage are you talking about, you wanted to say 2.8V for the RAM or was you talking about 1.8 Vcore?
Well, I'll try to give you both anwers anyway... :D
I used to run my Samsung PC3200 at 3.3V without any passive or active cooling on it, but this is VERY risky and this will also reduce the life of your memory. I don't think it will cause any harm to your memory if you run at 2.8V.
Either if you run at 1.8 Vcore, your temps are pretty good m8. Is this full load?

Hi Datsin,
I run my mem voltage at 2.8, and have for a long time, no harm or problems.
I run my CPUs at 1.85 voltage, and have for a long time.
Dfrancis hit it on the head.........Higher voltage means higher heat. Crank up the voltage, you crank up the heat. Facts of life.
As long as you have proper cooling, you can run them that way for the life of the mem and CPU. The life being, you will upgrade before you toast out either one.
Take care...........

and i was afraid to go above 1.725 on the core at 41c.
i think ill tinker today!:)

thanks guys.. i was talking about CPU not mem..
my mem runs @ 2.8.. i dont want to do to 2.9.. though it does spike that amount anyways..
had no problem running my Palamino @ 1.85 though this Thoroughbred's default voltage is 1.6.. and 1.85 seems a lot..
though if the only enemy is heat.. then iam going to be fine.
