I came home tonight and went to play a little GTA on Project Holy, which is my dually xeon box. Walked in to my room and gazed in horror as I noticed one of the CPU fans (which are LED lighted) was dim, and not moving. Oddly, the system was still working, and still folding at 100%. The Swiftech MCX603 was extremely hot to the touch, at least 60c im sure. Well, i powered down the system, and checked the fan connections.
The fan actually turned back on the second time, and would sort of fluctuate between on and off. I thought the fan was toast. But after switching some wiring around, I discovered that it was actually one of the 3-pin y splitters that went bad! Seems sort of odd, seeing as how it's worked for months and months now, and the case was all together and tied up nicely, nothing actually *moved* the wire, it just went suddenly bad.
Swapped out the Y cable and it all works fine again. I just can imagine what would have happened if those were athlons, proabbly would have burned the house down lol.
