Hey all,

After I managed to thrash another HD, I decided to see if I can recover it somehow (I'll learn this 'backup' thing one of these days...).

Anyway, I found this (http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm) program that works wonders, but it only allows to you see the files you've lost and not recover them unless you pay.

So my question is, are there any good data recovery softwares out there that won't put a hole in my shallow pockets?

Hi Drake,

Even the best programs only work in very specific situations. While these free tools that are available may help, they usually only help if you are encountering a specific data loss situation.Maybe it's the case for this program that you found, but some other progams may cause further or permanent data loss. While these free programs are provided with good intention, even when carefully used these utilities may cause recoverable data to be permanently lost and may cause the loss of additional data.Maybe you can find a free Data Recovery Software, but if it'll be reliable for your conditions, i don't know.
Sorry if i can't help you for now.

Free data recovery software? Somewhere in the back - behind the pile of gold dust, between the hen's teeth and the horse feathers... :) It one of those areas where if you really need it, you really pay for it, AFAIK - those data recovery specialists only charge and arm and a leg because they know they can get away with it... I second Lee's advice. ;)

Alright, alright, I suppose after the third time I'll learn my lesson and have it done with.

So, can anyone recommend any data recovery software that will support both NTFS and FAT32?

Try easy recovery (http://www.ontrack.com/).It supports FAT32 and NTFS.As i said before it may not resolve all data loss situations. Some instances may be very complex or severe in nature, and require professional data recovery services as Gregorach said before.
BTW, there's a Easy Recovery trial edition. (http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/).

BACKUP!! BACKUP!! my favs are TrueImage 6 (http://www.outpost.com/product/3448823) or Drive Image 2002 (http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/) True Image I believe is the first to allow you to create a Image or reimage a drive straight from windows :)
