Hi guys, I made the switch from ninjamircos to here:
My question is that I own a Epox EP-8K3A+. with Mushkin 2100 DDRam 512mb, high pref, cas2: should I get the new corsair mmx 2700 or 3000? would like to get higher fsb but I cant i think my ram is holding me back. OR should I wait for the new clawhammer and the new mobo for the 400mhz speed?please advise.

thanks,
joe

Ditto. If you are confident it is the RAM holding you back, the Corsair is excellent memory.

BTW, don't forget that running a lot of RAM will hold you back some. For best overclocking, 1 or 2 sticks of 256 is best. When you get into 3 sticks or more, or run some brands of 512 sticks, things are a little more troublesome at high FSB speeds. See Paul's FAQ under memory for more.

I am using one stick of 512mb, I tried to use my friends Samsung 2700, and got up to 190+, but that is with 2700. I have a Mushkin 2100 high prefs cas2. And I cant get anything over 159fsb with low mult.

Thanks,
Joe

Okay. Based on that, I beleive you would have much better luck with 2 256 sticks of Corsair PC3000. It's not cheap, but it does high fsb speeds very well.

mdzcpa I thought that 1 stick is better then 2? Pc3000 even if I have AthlonxP 1500+? So I should get the mmx2700 1 stick of 512mb or mmx 2700 1 stick 512mb. OR should I shouold I get mmx3000 512mb?

256 sticks overclock better than some 512 sticks. It has to do with the latencies built into the memory. The more memory on a single stick of RAM, the potentially more difficult it can be to overclock. There are some well known poor overclocking 512 sticks out there, although I have not heard that the Corsair 512 sticks specifically do poorly.

Yes, a single stick usually does overclock better than two. BUT, if you want 512 of memory, I suggest going with 2 256 sticks. I have heard of more problems overclocking single 512 sticks than 2 256 sticks. That's just my opinion though.

I will say that i have had great success overclocking 2 256 sticks of Corsair PC3000.

As far as what type....go with the PC3000 if you can swing the cash. If you go with PC2700 it is rated at a memory bus speed of 166mhz. Anything above that is overclocking and you are subject to the random hit and miss success above that speed.

If you go with the PC3000, you get hand picked memory gauranteed to run at least 185mhz. Anything above that is overclocking.

So, as you can see, starting with the PC3000 you get a much better overall chance of high overclocks.

It costs more...but is worth it IMOHO.

mdzcpa I think the ram is holding me back cause i cant go higher then around 304 or 306. what do you think, should I be able to go higher? with this mushkin ram?
