Im running a XP 1700 (Palamino i believe?) not OC. Under constant load from Folding my CPU is @ 69 and my case is @ 35. Am I in any danger of burning out the CPU? My CPU idles @ 57.

Hi Ryuujin,
Since I hav'nt been around, Welcome to LN.Com.
We need to know a few more things.. is you cpu temp in F or C? If it's in C we (most o/c) don't like to see a load temp higher than that of 55C, just a rule of thumb. What kinda Cooler are you using? Maybe it would'nt hurt to upgrade. Sounds like your case ventilation is good.. must just be the cooler of contact between the cooler and the cpu.

Barring incorrect temp readings, that seems really high for a 1700+ Pally, It is still within AMD specs but most folks would tend to be uncomfortable at that level (myself included). My hottest running AXP is a 2100+ Palomino, which as far as I know is the Hottest Athlon there is. My 2100+ is running mildly overclocked with Factory retail Heatsink @ 45 c idle, and about 52 c full load.
Your 1700+ should be running somewhere below that, I would say look into your cooling solution, do you have a decent application of thermal paste? If you used the stuff that comes pre-applied to some heat sinks I would suggest cleaning it off and getting decent paste on it. If your problem doesn't lie with the thermal paste it may be time to look into an upgrade for your cooler.
One other thing to mention is depending on your room temps, your case temp seems kind of high.... My case temps run about 22 c, which is about equal to Room temperature.... Your case temp is Equal to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Just cooling your case interior might bring your CPU temp down quite a bit.

what are your system specs? i ran a 1700 locked with the snot oc'd out of it as much as my board allowed and even under SERIOUS (Seti,folding,benchmarks,3-D mark, mohaa, etc...) most all at once i never went over 65c even with my vantec H/S and fan.
FWIW, i dropped a few degreeze using Much less thermal compound then i would have imagined nessisary and taking the time to lap the heatsink first.
let us know!

Im running cheap paste and I thought an ok heat sink but I was wrong.:aargh!:
I want to water cool so I dont want to really spend anything but I will get artic silver paste for the mean time. I didnt realize that the paste could make such a difference.
Also my case sits in a cabnet for now so that could be making a difference. And in Phoenix its 78F in my house right now.:D

Your case Temps are at 95 Farenheit, and Ambient say, averages 80 f, or 27 c, so If you could improve your air flow to the case that would help some, good paste will help some as well, also keep your fan blades, and heatsink fins clear of dust ( I use a small paint brush).
It sounds like you may have a combination of things keeping your temps high.
What heatsink/fan are you using?

SHould I get a shim? are they to help cool?

The shim I had on my 1800+ keeps it real cool. In fact it caused it to die so it's running real cool now. :)
Don't get a shim. They came out when people were breaking cores with orbs. If you're careful you won't crush a core.

Well I determined my setup is just crap. And after some searching I found a SLK-800 for $35, Thermaltake Coolmod Fan for $15 and shipping for $8. I can deal with that until I get my water cooling money:D

Good choice, thats a pretty decent cooling setup...

My hottest running AXP is a 2100+ Palomino, which as far as I know is the Hottest Athlon there is. I can confirm this :)
Yeah, I'd put an improper mounting at fault, because even for a house in Phoenix that seems too high. Maybe faulty monitoring too. But the new HSF should fix you up nicely ;)

Well I got my new parts today :D Now under full load the cpu is 41c and the case is 31c. That is with the fan full tilt:rolleyes:

Sure a whole lot better then your original 69 C, thats a VERY liveable temperature....
Nice work.....
