View Full Version : The best HSF out there in now days?
Hi,
After a month trying to find the best software/Drivers setup for my PC at work, It's time to overclock it a bit. I'm currently seeing 44c and 55c for CPU surface and Core temps (IDLE). It's damn hot here about 30-34c ambient and i use a Volcano 9+ at full honk. I don't care about noise I just want the best out there ok guys?

Thermalright SLK-900 w/92mm Vantec Tornado. If you don't care about noise leave that sucker full cranked. Can cool an AMD 2400+ (1.6v) idle 24C load 30C
just for reference i have an slk-800 with a vantec tornado 80mm that i keep at 7v and it cools my 2100+ oc to 2.35 @ 1.8v idle 35C load 39C

get the thermalright slk 800.
That coupled with a a relatively quiet fan can get you temps that are insanely sweet.
The newer slk 800s can be bolted through mobo too, which will supposedly make it work better.
Or if you have space try fitting the slk 900, which uses 92 mm fans
good luck~

I'll toss my vote for slk 800/900 also. Definately best performing choices. Just be aware that the 900 insists on being mounted with bolts through the motherboard, and it unfortunately isn't compatible with all boards... Thermaltake does keep a database of compatibility though.

its thermal right and not thermaltake....but the new 800 has the bolt on option too....so make sure you have holes.
i love my slk 800 with the clip though...clips are just easier to use in my point of view.
its a heavy mobo but solid copper construction, cant beat it!

The SLK series is top notch...I would also recommend the OCZ Gladiator 2 it cools awesome and can be had for a lot cheaper the the SLK's

if you want cheapness and goo performance go with the alpha pal 8045. It isnt quite as good as the thermalrights, but I used one for over a year and it was my favorite until i got the thermalright.
Maybe one day ill remove my WC setup and go back to thermalright...hehe just kidding! ;)

Thermal Right,.
Thermal Take,.
I use the "Thermal Underwear SUX/900" myself....
Thank's for all the reply's fellas, I'm very inclined to go with the SLK-900U and a Vantec 92mm Tornado like Zenvota said. But They don't say if It fits the KD7-R. :( Will do some research through the net.

some people had to bend their capacitors a bit in order to fit a 900...i really have to wonder if the 900 performs as well as the 800...i mean the fan choices available for 80mm fans is definitely a lot better than 92 mm fans.
good luck though and maybe post some money shots of the 900 sitting on your mobo? :)
good luck
Thanx again for the info fellas, It's the Vantec Tornado the best Fan out there? it's "only" 4800rpm.

Vantec has a couple 92mm fans, the 92x38 fellow moves some serious air, Its not called the Tornado lightly, you might find a 92mm with higher cfm but I haven't....
I did some serious thought on this exact subject, most of the tests I saw showed a small reduction in temps over the SLK 800, but it did beat it in every test I saw.... (using same fan)
I actually ordered the Slk 900U and the 92x38mm Tornado. Four days after SVC charged my CC they decided it was out of stock, and sent me an email. I was really upset (big plans and a shiny new 2100+) I cancelled my order.
Given a little time to rethink, I pondered on my Volcano 9 noise level and considered 2 times that minimum running the Tornado full tilt. In short since this system is in the Family room I decided to go with water, getting ready to order it now.
If noise, and $$$, is not a consideration I don't think your going to find ANY other HSF combo that will beat it...
Vantec 92mm x 38mm Tornado
Air Flow 119 CFM
Fan Speed 4800 RPM
Power 12.5 W
Bearing Type Dual Ball Bearing
Fan Size 92x92x38 MM
Noise Level 56.4 db
Connector 3 & 4 pin

although the tornados are nice, being exposed to an extended period of noise pollution can really drive you insane.
i used to use a screaming delta with my thermalright slk 800...then i switched to a panaflo and saw a 5C difference in temps...but the reduction of noise was just worth it.
as long as noise doesnt bother you, then go for the tornado...i think its made by nidec....so its a high quality fan...

If I'm not mistaken, the SLK-900 is about $45, which isn't a far cry from the MCW4000 and MCW462 or some such... If you're going for a high-CFM 80mm fan, this'd be the perfect heatsink to pair it with, plus it fits more mobos without a problem than the SLK-900.

between an slk-800 with an 80mm fan and an slk-900 with the 92mm fan its about a 6C difference. Those are vantec tornados of course. If you put the thing on a rheostat the noise is alright. might distract some persons sleep but im alright with it. Ruantic check newegg.com

O, ok, gotcha, but like i was saying I've decided the $60 some dollars spent on that is a good portion of a H20 system, and I'm going that way now, I've got my watercooler goodies on a truck heading my way from New York :)

sounds good
Friday I was pretty bored at work cause I was waiting for the authorization code for the 3D program I use. So I decided to lap my Volcano 9+. After almost half hour lapping I ended with a damn cool mirror finish surface. When I was mounting the fan back I added four spacers to move the fan 1cm away from the Heatsink. The results? almost 10c less!! I had not enough time on friday to make tests, cause I'm very curious to see what will happend if I remove the spacers, I'm saying this cause I want to know much it helped. So if you guys want to shave some degress rom your CPU I strongly recommend these tweaks.

Lapped my Volcano 9 not long after I got my 2100+ unfortunately didn't seem to make a noticeable difference, If you get a chance pull the spacers and let me know, would be interested in the results. Gonna watercool but this volcano is going to go on a Soyo Kt400 with a 1700+...
Hi Ruantic,
I'll do it on monday that's for sure!:D Oh I forgot to say that I also applied a VERY thin layer of thermal paste, I think some people fear a "no contact" CPU and tend to add a lot of thermal paste to make sure they will make contact. This worse the scenario.
Regards, KODE.
Feedback: Removed the spacers and my temp went up 1c.

Thanks for posting the update, much appreciated, every little bit helps, I'll have to give it a shot on mine see if it makes a difference.
You're welcome Ruantic, I think what provided this huge temp decrease was all the tweaks I did, not just the lapping. Of course the lapping was the most effective. I will make a small list of those tweaks in case anyone wants to try:
1- Lapped HS to mirror finish surface.
2- Added 1cm spacers between the HS and the fan.
3- Bended the HS clamp a bit to add more pressure on the CPU core ( be aware of the risks!! ).
4- Bended towards the HS the Chrome "Duct" that direct the fan blast to the HS. ( Volcano 9+ / TT logo on it)
5- VERY thin layer of thermal paste on the core.
