Mike, what were the problems you experienced using Via 4-in-1 4.28 on XP?

I know you mentioned some problem, but I cant seem to see any of the old posts.

is 4.27 affected?

I`m not sure which post you may have been referring to, but what I had mentioned regarding Win XP and the VIA 4in1`s was that everything included in the 4.28 or earlier already comes with Win XP. Therefore, you really do not need any of the earlier 4in1 versions when running that OS. In addition, the older service packs were not designed for installation under XP, and some users have had serious problems installing earlier 4in1 versions under XP.

Starting with 4.37 and up you do get a newer AGP driver and IDE filter than what XP offers. There is also an INF file which installs, but it is useless really.

Because of this, i had mentioned that with XP installs I did not install the 4in1`s as a matter of routine. Instead, I would only install the 4.10(b) AGP driver and 1.20 IDE filter seperately. Again, I just don`t like the VIA installation routine under the service pack for XP with the 4.37.

Things improved a lot under 4.38 with XP installations.

So, my recommendation for just about any install with Win XP on a newer VIA based mobo is to either use the 4.38(2)v(a) 4in1 or install the 4.10(b) AGP driver and 1.20 IDE filter seperately.

BTW, I am currently experimenting with the beta 4.39 4in1. It has a new AGP driver (4.11). So far I, and many others, have had great success with it, and it has definitely added some AGP performance.

If you have an older VIA mobo (pre KT266), I always suggest that no 4in1`s are used as all the support needed for the older chipsets is built into XP, and you avoid the potential problems caused by the installation routines of the older 4in1 with XP.

Hope this helps:)

Oops...i meant version 4.38, the latest final version. Too many damn numbers to remember ;)

Someone was telling me that installing Via 4-in-1 version 4.38 caused problems with the ide controllers with WinXP. I thought it was you but might have been someone else.

I am very adimate about installing the latest drivers/firmware for everything in my PCs, a theology which some people dont agree with. The only reason I wouldnt install the latest drivers for something is if theres a known issue with them.

I have other XP machines running with 4.38 with no problems, but I wanted to make sure before I installed it on my two new PCs.

I may try the new AGP driver at home, if its boosting performance. Must...break...14000!

No issues with the 4.38s at all:) Seems VIA worked out a good XP installation routine.

The APG driver in the beta 4.39 4in1 netted me about 150 points in 3DMark2001SE.
