Ever since I upgraded to XP none of my comps can see each other on the network. Ive run the "setup small office network" in the networking screen My own comp cant even see itself. Never had this problem using 98. Using a 4port Linksys router with Kingston 10/100 nic and a Linksys nic. I was using two Kingston nic's but I switched one card out hoping two different brand cards might be able to see each other. All comps on the router get online but the comps can see themselves or other comps on the router. Any Ideas? If i hookup a 98 machine to the router it sees the other comps and itself. Maybe Im missing a protocol. Here's what i have in the properties screen of my Lan: Client for Microsoft Networks, File and print sharing, Internet protocol TCP/IP. All drives are shared fully with Internet firewall disabled.

Hullo,

right, first thing to do is a search for "\\machinename" to see if they can see each other.

If they can, then your network is working fine.

To see machines in XP and windows 2000, you have to see in a slightly different place i tend to find.

Instead of all thge machines being listed in the network neighbourhood, they are hidden away a few layers down.

from windows explorer, go into "my network places", then "entire network", then "microsoft windows network", then into your domain or workgroup name, and you should see all your machines listed there

hope that helps a bit

Are you using DHCP? As MrP said, make sure all the machines share a workgroup name.

Are they all XP machines? 2K/XP machines dont like seeing Win9X machines sometimes and vice versa. Has to do with security permissions.

Usually, you just have to use \\machinename to get around this. That should always work if the network is set up properly, even if you cant see clients.

You can also use Add Network Place in XP. This might help XP to 'remember' where machines are, so you would see them in your Network Place.

Make sure you have NetBios enabled on all the machines. Should be in your TCP settings. Select Enable NetBios over DHCP, or just standard enable if you know how.

Well theres somethings to try anyway. WIndows can be quite dumb about things like this unless you set up a full fledged Domain Server.

We aren't affiliated with NinjaMicros. Many of our members here are also on NinjaMicros. But I dont think NM has any plans on shutting down. Were just seperate sites :)

Hi crono,

We are not part of Ninja Micros.

We are seperate and will not be part of them.

Many of the folks at NM have moved over to here, because of various reasons, none of which I will go into.

We are a seperate BBS and we are still an O/C, Software, Hardware,SETI group who wish to remain in the trade.

Good to see you over again.:D

Take care........
