To celebrate my new found job, I purchased a Sony DVD+RW/-RW drive today. I got the external version since BestBuy was out of the internal versions, so I spent a little more. But, this drive does both + and - formats, so should be very cool. Now I can record the MPEG2s I save off the AIW 9700 Pro right to DVD! I'm going to record the movie Seven tonight, so I'll try it out :) This should be a great alternative to burning DivX on CDs, and also great for backups. Each disk stores 4.7g, which kind of sucks, wish it was 9g. But, it looks like the format wars are over now, so 4.7g it is.

The media is expensive though, I bought a 50 pack of DVD-Rs for $99. $2 a DVD, I guess thats not hideous. In fact, its probably cheaper than CD-Rs byte per byte. The drive is USB2, which I had great luck with when I used the external Sony CD-RW 40x writer at my ex job.

Does anyone really know the difference between the +R and -R formats?

Hey Tom,

Some quick googling revealed this (http://www.dvdadept.com/DVD_Formats.asp). I'm not sure if it's too helpful, as I didn't find much technical info on the page.

Have fun with the DVD burner. DRU-500 or what?
