Here's what I think IMHO of some of the Pro's and Con's compared to an external ADSL modem:
Pro's
Out of sight.
Desk space free'd up
Free's up a USB port.
No external power required.
No extra power and USB cable in the way.
Con's
Takes up a PCI slot
Takes up an IRQ.
Takes up space in your computer case.
Can be a pain to get to behind your PC.
Requires tools and opening the chassis to fit.
PCI card may not like an overclocked PCI bus.
No activivity Led's.

UR...my ADSL modem came with a router/firewall and a 4-port hub. But it's great for sharing an internet connection to other PCs.
If you ever want to share your connection with other PCs, i'd recommend getting an external unit which connects to your PC via Ethernet.
Yeah, it is possible to do this with an internal modem as well, but you'll be wasting a PCI slot, and will have to use a software based firewall/router which won't be as elegant as a hardware solution. Plus, that machine has to be on all the time for the other PCs to connect.
