hi,
i waz plannin' on buildin' a media center pc so wat imma do is merge the media center pc along with the encodin' pc into one.
i will b gettin' corsair xms3500CL2 256x2 ram to take use of the dual ddr. so yeah i'm plannin' on the granite bay. gigabyte 8inxp. it has the fastest encodin' time from the tomshardware bench of all the other granite bays. but if i do dat. dan i will b unable to get a p4 right away as that board alone comes close to 300. and id hafta get like a 1.7ghz celeron since daz da one that starts usin' the 478pin socket. and only 55 bucks. and get the corsair memory much later along with the p4. and later when the springdale or cantersomethin' chipset come out wit the 800mhz fsb. i'll get that board and use that as my media center/encodin' pc and bring the granite bay as my main rig and give my current main rig to my g/f. imma have quite some bill on credit card. blah.
in 2004 imma get the dual amd opteron system (providin' its a good investment) if the benchmarks go well.
if your talking about media centre then i think you will want more ram than 512.
i would have thought nearer a gig would be closer to the mark esp if your going to be pausing live TV etc

yeah. i am gon add more ram later when i got money.
my original plan was the asus p4pe board but drake says the abit at7 max 2 wit the i845pe chipset is better. and get the p4 2.4ghz 533mhz version. dat would cost close to 400 alone...(estimate)
in 10 days theres gon b a price drop on all the p4s above 2ghz. all below will b discontinued
question. how much better would hyper threading be? as oppose to a cpu witout.
would it make a major difference in encodin' time?
hyperthreading basically means you have 2 logical processors, so it should make quite a bit of a difference.
also, if you thinking about upgrading fvrom 512mb to 1024, you might be better off buying a single stick of 512mb first, then adding a second stick of 512 when you have the cash.
granted you might lose a bit of performance to start with, you you will save yourself money

hmm k.
that corsair xms3500CL2 512 cost round 230 includin' shippin'
well i'm not gon complete buildin' dis system for quite some time
p4 3.06ghz like .............................650
gigabyte 8inxp .............................300
corsair xms3500CL2 512megs...... 230
thermalright slk900........................060
daz a hefty pricetag.
i wonder how long id take to encode an entire dvd (4.5gb) usin' the nforce2 dual ddr, and the abit it7max2 i845pe board. if its a reasonable time n stuff i'll go for it.
wat imma do for now is get the abit it7max2 i845pe wit p4 2.4ghz n xms3500CL2 512megs bout half the cost of the one wit HT.

GRRR!:mad::mad: I just spent 30 mins typing up a reply but when I hit send my connection crapped out. Bah, here's a condensed version.
SiS has introduced a new chipset, the SiS 655. It, too, offers dual DDR support, and this time up to PC2700. Here's a link (http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.html?i=1784&p=9) to some benches, showing the SiS 655 chipset kicking E7205's arse. Here's a link (http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.html?i=1781) to the board at the top on the Media Encoding benchmarks. Shouldn't be long before these start showing up at newegg and the likes.
The SLK-900 doesn't fit all mobos. I'm fairly certain the MCX4000 does, and it performs just as well, if not better.
XMS PC3500 uses the same chips as XMS PC3200 LL. Get whichever is the better buy, scince they are the same thing. Considering neither the E7205 chipset or the SiS 655 chipset 'officially' support more than PC2100 and PC2700 respectively, some lesser RAM may be a better buy. 1GB (2x512) of XMS PC2700 LL goes for $335 at newegg.i wonder how long id take to encode an entire dvdReal-time DVD encoding is impossible. You encode to your HD, then burn to disc later. A DVD is 4.7, 9.4, or 25GB, depending on which format it is and if it's double sided.

hey thanks drak
i had not even considered the SiS 655 chip.
BUT now i have to ponder which????
good link very informative.
and i like the fire wire suport for gigabyte on this one 2.
