If you're very careful, no. But most HDDs after that extreme of a mod die within 6 months or so. No matter how careful you are, there will never be 0% of anything in the air.

EEEECK
6 months hell ill just leve the lights off baby.
lol
thanks
they dont tell you about that in the how to's!
sort of thought that cos why would they spend millions of doller to have a type IV air puifier in a production plant when all they had to do was go into the bathroom turn on the hot water to get rid of the dust in the air with the humidity.
I remember to see something related to this, but can't remember where and when.Anyway, it's not a good idea, i think, unless you do it using a clean room.Dust is a dangerous enemy for the hard disk plates.

Hrmm, I wonder why Maxtor and Seagate do that. If you go into a larger computer store, say Fry's or something, they'll have HDs with a clear top on, yet they're not sold. Kinda disappointing to me.

arent HDDs vaccum sealed inside?
No Brinky, they are not.The hdd head and disk are enclosed in the disk enclosure, which is sealed to prevent the entry of dust. The disk enclosure also has a breathing filter.Through this filter, inside and outside air is exchanged whenever a pressure difference occurs between the inside and outside of the disk enclosure as the spindle starts or the temperature changes.
